Hi,

Looking at options, how well do you honestly rate your EF200mm F2L IS lens?
I am toying with the idea of getting this for:
i. celestial/astro photography
ii. studio - close-crop portraits
iii. outdoor portraiture
iv. pet photography (monkies, parrots, birds and cats)

Should I decide to buy this lens in Brazil - it will then end up costing me 3 times the price of that in the UK.

Advice appreciated in advance.... ;)

:D - in the North East of Brazil for 6 months a year. I have a small ranch over there where I am setting up my Studio. In the grounds, there are wild monkies that habitually annoy my 10 cats.
As it is a small fruit-farm, the monkies love to graze and trash my fruits - and yes I do grow bananas too!
(I also live in the UK for 6months)

Honestly, I would buy the 135L and shove it on your 40D... You will get an equiv. field of view of 216mm at f/2 on it for a MUCH cheaper price then the 200L f/2 :D

BUT the images are nowhere near the quality you get from using it with a 5d. Those images are just "magic", combine that with the 200/2 and you have the dream set up.

Don't know if its long enough for the astro stuff but its one of Canons BEST and works for all the others listed and is a killer candid lens.

The 200 2L is sharper than the 135L has less C/A and if that wasn't enough IS. I can get low light candids consistently at 1/40 of a sec at events I shoot and therefor get shots I would never be able to get with the 135 and it is a great pairing with a FF body like the 5D.

You'd get the FOV, you'd get f/2 for the same exposure, but you will NOT get the same DOF as using 200mm @ f/2 on a FF body (assuming you keep the same position to keep the framing/perspective the same)

No I know I know... Just giving option :D

The 200 f/2 looks incredible, for sure... I would love to own it... (along with the 135L!). Too bad the price is so high...

The 200mm f2 is freakishly expensive. I'd be happy with a 300mm f2.8. The bokeh is amazing on the 300.

Yep the 300 2.8 is one of 3 lenses that are Canons best but a 300 is usually to long to shoot candids (200 2L is almost to long(I said almost LoL)and portraits in a studio (most anyway) but the 300 2.8 the 200 2L and the 400 2.8 are all 3 great and 3 of Canons best. Good glass is and will probably always be expensive. Have you checked the prices of Lieca M or Hassy Zeiss? The 200 2L is one of Canons lenses that is in that kind of quality category. What I kinda find a little skewed is the fact some have no problem with dropping 5 K on a body but find glass at the price point to pricey.;)

Bokeh is pretty darn nice on the 200 2L too.

from all the purposes you said you would use it for, i think only on the outdoor portraits would the 200 f2 really shine. for the other purposes, there are better lenses for those needs.

the 200 f2 is very expensive and very specialized. for your needs i think money can be better spent. people have already mentioned 135L and 300 f2.8

but if you are just really wealthy and have money burining a hole in your pants, go right ahead, it's a great lens
