Last night I came across this darkly amusing scene in my pond. The iris sawfly larvae (Rhadinoceraea micans) always do a good job on my iris leaves, but here I saw, on a leaf that was hanging over, three larvae on the end piece, which was perilously close to being severed by one of their mates above.
They tend to leave the very central stem of the leaf, sometimes leaving them looking like thin sticks, and as the top larva changed to start cutting a new layer it looked like they'd got away with it.
But then he came back and I got this shot just moments before they fell to the water's surface.
