I pulled the trigger on the 100 f2.8L Macro IS and the 70-200 f2.8L IS II yesterday, and had it shipped overnight.

Opened the shipping box this morning and found this on the 70-200 box!

What does the inside look like? The shipping styrofoam inside the 70-200 box is pretty sturdy, the lens is in a carrying pouch wrapped in bubble wrap so I sorta doubt the small crunch in the corner of the box is going to have any effect. Check it carefully of course, but just that corner dent shouldn't be cause for too much concern......unless, of course, you insist on the box being in excellent shape.

I'd check the internals; as the previous poster mentioned, those things are packed pretty heavily. I doubt that enough shock went through to really do much, myself.

That would have disappointed me also. I would call the vendor and report it first. It doesn't necessarily mean the lens itself is damaged if otherwise packed properly. If you want a pristine box though you could return it. Just my ¢¢.

If the lens is fine, then I think your okay. Usually, the lens are packed with styrofoam. Basically, the lens can't move. Corners on boxes are the most prone to getting squished. It's the top of the box you'll have to worry about. ;) Like Dennis said, don't be concerned about the box. I wouldn't. I'd be more concerned with the lens.

I have to agree as well, it's the lens that counts and they are pretty well cushioned though a mashed corner would pi$$ m off as well.

i don't see what's wrong with it. the box is meant to protect the lens. if the lens is not damaged, it looks like the box did it's job perfectly.

dont worry about it as long as the lens is fine... unless you are collecting the boxes or something like that.

And I would agree that it's the lens inside that counts. A buddy of mine also said I could run it by Canon (Irvine) and have them check it out, since they're so close.

My concern, perhaps overly so, is that when it comes time to resell the lens, there's a perception of damaged goods.

It's fine. My 5DM2 show up in more beat up box and all was in superb condition.
Canon knows how to pack their stuff.

It's not that bad. If everything looks OK inside just ignore the box.

If you must have a ding, a corner is probably to best place - a crude but effective crumple zone, offering progressive deceleration.
