This thread is for UWA lenses in particular the new sigma 8-16 (crop) (equiv to 12-24 (FF))

What I Know:
- The important filters are ND, and polarisers
- GND are important if you want to get it right in camera (i.e. not exposure bracketing and Photoshop)
- Filter holders < 100mm wont work with UWA(vignette)
- Cokin X-pro (130mm) will work with single filters
- X-pro can work on lenses with bulbous front elements (i.e. Option A (external link) or Option B or using the screws (not as good)

What I would like to know:
- Can you use 3 filters (2x ND + polariser) with a cokin Z (100mm) at 17mm
- Will Cokin Z holders and Lee (100mm) holders work at 8mm (with the above adaption) if using only 1 ND filter and rotating the filter holder so the side bits (things that hold the filter in place) are at the top and bottom of the lens instead of the sides (I realise this wont work with GND because the horizon line will be vertical)

Thanks Nathan

I'll reply to my own thread just to add that when using the cokin-Z at 8mm I would remove the 2 outer most filter holders or invert it.

Are these 100 mm on FF or 1,6 x (or even 1,3x?) crop?

40D 1.6crop for sigma 8-16mm

100mm is the 4" filters (i.e. Lee normal or cokin Z-Pro)

A polarisor will cause uneven color on a UWA by its nature, you will notice banding in the sky,ie not natural colorization that occurs in nature, due to the spread of the viewing area. ND filters might be nice but dang near impossible to prevent vignetting with them unless you use 4 by 6 inch nds held in contact with the built in hood.

Canon 60D,18-55mm,55-250mm,50mm compact macro, AF ext tubes. Sigma 8-16mm uwa, 18-250mm, 85mm F1.4, 150-500mm

As far a i know the ND filters are 4x4, GND's are 4x6

This thread helps a bit more (external link)

I just need someone to do this same thing at 8mm (sig), 10mm (canon) or 11mm (tok) but rotate the holder NINETY degrees. I think that person is going to have to be me

From the thread above it looks like it will work though.

At 17mm on FF, 1xND filter and a CPL only just starts to vignette using a lee wide angle adaptor.

Hey monk3y,

Seems you already have the lens and want to hand hold (not use a filter holder) you could test it in the following way. Remember to post back here with the results

Get a piece of cardboard bigger than 4"x4" (say 5"x5") and cut out a 4x4 hole in the middle.

Hold that against your built in hood and see if you can see any cardboard in the viewfinder.

wow!! yes yes...hmmm I'll try that out...my P-series 85mm filter will almost fit on the front element of the lens hahaha its that big!!!

I want an ND8 and GND soft line... I think I could handhold the filter for around 30sec.. as the other alternative DIY style holder using the cokin x-pro series is very very expensive.

Hence why I want to try and get away with the Z size. Especially since the X size is way overkill for every other focal length.

And cokin Z holder can use Lee, hitech and other brand filters.

Personally I want a holder to minimise vibrations

After you try the cardboard out don't chuck it. The next thing I want you to do (if you can) is to stick bits of cardboard on it to simulate the holders 'arms' (the bits that hold the filter)
