I just received my 20-35 f/2.8 L, and I love the lens. Only issue I see is the focus freeze up. For instance, when I focus on an object, it focuses and then I take the picture. I look at the picture, and wow, perfect focus & sharp. But then, when I go switch to another subject, the lens stops focusing, but when I press the shutter button, it still takes the picture. I look at this picture, and wow, it's just blur & bokeh.

Is there something wrong with the lens?

If it didn't have this issue, it would be the perfect lens!

&...this happens sometimes, not all the time. but it's not because I'm close to the subject or because of lighting.

No - that does not sound right at all; unless you are possibly at a distance that is less than the minimum required focusing distance. Does this happen for all objects at any distance?

Yes, at any distance.

That really is odd Logg - I was under the impression that with all Canon cameras, you cannot take a picture unless the lens achieves focus lock.

Now, is it possible that the focus point is in fact focussing on a part of the scene different than what you are intending? A good example is when the shooter stands two people near a wall, uses center point AF, the lens does a perfect job of getting the back wall into sharp focus because that is where the AF fell, and the people end up being blurred.

And how are you judging focus - and on what kind of camera - on the LCD, via print, or at 100% crop? I'm guessing the camers is focusing on something..... otherwise you could not take the picture. This would be a matter of technique then. - Stu

I forgot to ask: What focus points are you using, and what is your shutter speed set at? Perhaps these OOF images are really unsharp pictures resulting from camera shake caused by shutter speeds that are too low?

Hmm, well I used the same shutter speed. The focus point is always in the middle. I really don't know, I think I'm confusing myself. The lens seems to work fine now. I got this lens when I woke up, so I might have had some brain fart...then again, if it happens again, with your permission, I'll PM you.

AF lock on in camera options maybe?

AF/MF, not possible. The switch is pretty sturdy! And I checked the AF, I think this problem was me, not the lens. Waking early = this and bad coordination. Thanks everyone!

If I don't like this lens, I might sell it. Good lens, but it's not for me. I might be better off with the Tamron...
