Can you recommend a recent remote for 40D, plus something that would also work with future camera upgrade.

Doesn't have to be made by Canon

Not sure what to go with, small IR remote, or one of those remotes that you plug into hotshoe or remote switch.

help me decide.

This may be problematic - most of the connectors change between series, so a remote for the 40D should be different to one that works on the 1-series. . . . Although the Cleon II as (Headshotzx pointed out) appears to have interchangable cable connectors . . . .

I wouldn't be concerned about camera upgrades. The 40D uses the same shutter remote pin jacks as the 5D/7D/1D.
