Urge to go FF

I really don't know whats come over me lately, but I have a mighty urge to switch to FF. Or at least buy a full frame camera.

Fullframe-itis I suppose. But here's the catch. I'm only going to have about $1000 to spend. I don't need HD video or none of that doo-hickey nonsense like in the 5dmkii. I've been looking around, and it seems my options are to go for a 1ds, or a 5Dc. Hmmm, anyone have any suggestions as far as FF bodies around the $1000 range go?

Or am I speaking nonsense and should just expand my lens collection, maybe stepping into L territory with a nice L prime(like the 135mm f2,100mm 2.8 ), or a couple of non L prime lens (85mm 1.8 and 100mm 2.8 ). Or maybe even an L zoom, like the 24-105, for a versatile walk-around.

Should I wait for my fullframe-itis to die out and just expand my lens collection, or cure it with a 1ds or a 5Dc?

What do you want to do that you're currently unable to do with your camera and lenses?

I had 40D and it's a great camera, sold it for a 5D mainly because I wanted to get more wide-angle out of my 35L. If you don't know what you really need a FF for, spend your money on lenses.

I just picked up a 5d MkII, but from what I've heard about the 5d classic, you can't go wrong. I love FF, as you do too apparently. That said, don't skimp and buy just to buy. Save and get what you really want. I didn't buy the 5D MkII for video. I bought it for the quality of it's still images. If you're buying just to buy, look at lenses first and get yourself prepared for the FF camera body.

Just my $.02.

Yea, I admit, part of me wants to get full frame just to get it. It's that techno lust again. And really, I never thought of switching until my friend mentioned he was going to switch to FF in the future. But I really do find myself needing FF in the future as much as I want it. I think it really suits my style of shooting. I mostly shoot on the wide side of the focal spectrum and I think full frame right now would be a step forward for me. And I think my lens collection in the future will benefit from my jump to FF. I rarely shoot on the long, telephoto lens. Maybe when I take that rare head shot, or maybe sports. But this rarely happens. I am usually shooting landscapes, urban areas, indoor events, low light, and amateur wedding photog, nothing seriousl. And recently I've been shooting fashion, but on the wide end, not portraits. So I think the 1.6 crop factor is irrelevant to my style of shooting.

And I do have room for upgrades in my glass collection, but nothing I really really need or even want. Let's see, I can upgrade my nifty, but it doesn't get much time on my crop body because its too long. That rules out the 85mm 1.8 also. Maybe the 28-135 can be a 24-105L, but I don't see the point of having this lens when you can get the 24-70 and have 2.8, but this is out of my budget curently. And maybe a 135mm f2 or 100mm macro, but I don't really see myself using these alot. Maybe the lens I want the most would be the 24mm L, but again, this is out of my price range. But even though I get these lens in the future, I could get way more out of them with FF.

Yes....It would be a waste to go to a 5D and only use the 28-135 on it.

If you like shooting wide, why haven't you bought a lens wider than your 28-135? Seems like you should have "UWA-itis" instead of "FF-itis"

A Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16 is quite a bit cheaper than a 5D.

+1. Don't go FF just to go FF... you'll ultimately be disappointed when your shots look a little different, but not substantially. Work on the glass first, and get yourself something like a Tokina 11-16.

I felt like you did but I upgraded glass before I purchased the 5D. It is nice to see 28mm be 28mm in FF, so it will be a significant change in your shooting. If you can find a good deal on a 5Dc, you won't regret getting it. Be prepared to to spend more on glass soon because you'll probably want new glass right away.

spend your money on some good glass. You'll get a helluva lot more out of fine lenses. upgrading to FF just 'cause is stupid and pointless and a waste of money.

And the only big reason to get FF for wide shots is to get the 24L. Otherwise, there are many more UWA options for 1.6 than for FF. UWA is not a weakness for 1.6 format like people think, and unlike what you think, it's not 'irrelevant' to what you shoot. It is a fully capapble format that can shoot anything you throw at it.

I'd reconsider and get more lenses. be open to EF-S lenses and you'll discover the true power of 1.6.

you know, I wanted to go FF in a huge, big, bad way until I was shooting a wedding with a friend with a 5dmkii that couldn't keep up with my 40D.
I agree with the "get some good glass" comment.
perhaps some good used glass so that if you decide to go FF, you can unload them easily and without losing money on it.
better yet, get some glass that will fit crop or FF

just another 2 cents
meh...make that 1.5 cents.

You're serious about the 5dii not keeping up with the 40d for weddings. Maybe you better tell the thousands of wedding photographers out there shooting with the 5dii that they better change over to the 40d.

I wonder how well the 40d did when the lighting got low and the iso went up?

If it's techno-lust your after, the 5DC isn't really the way to go. Your current body has more techno-pizzaz. The 5DC is a pretty basic tool, kind of like a 10D with a big sensor.

So.. truth comes out. It's keeping up with the Jones'. :):)

So I think the 1.6 crop factor is irrelevant to my style of shooting.

The crop factor is much overblown and irrelevant. Build your kit with what you have now. If it wide your looking for there are many options. Changing sensor size will do little to open new avenues of photography. Adding new glass will change things more.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

it was the AF in low light that made him go to manual focus while my 40D was locking focus and getting the shots with no problem.
my apologies, no disrespect intended, just my experience
