It's a male Bobolink. A great shot of it too!

Yep, very nice. In my limited experience, these birds are tough to approach.

Nice shot of Bob. When you approach, they try and lead you away, but if you set up your tripod, they will come back to see what your up to. :)

Thanks very much. It was hard to get close . I had to crawl around in the deep grass swishing away the horseflies.

Thanks canonloader . I hate carrying around a tripod when I'm nature shooting. I might pick up a unipod. I have a gorilla pod , but after about a month the seams started to split and it was very loose.

The point is, don't chase it around. If you stop, or crouch down, it will come back to see what's up. :)

They are territorial birds, they have a nesting ground and use the same area every year. He'll be around and there should be many others. They are group birds, like Red wings. They will leave in early fall though, cause they have to go all the way to Argentina.

By the way, this bird flies over the Gulf of Mexico to get to South America, in one of two routes, over Cuba and along the Antilles, or straight across the big part. They are in more danger this fall than at any time since Columbus. With the water covered with oil and poisons, they are probably going to be decimated on this fall trip and probably next spring. It's a real tragedy.
