Here are a few shots from a wee blast down the River Tummel, near Perth, Scotland.

Still have more to upload, but here is the set on my Flickr. (external link)

All photos taken with a 400D + 50mm 1.8 and all have been cropped to an extent.

Nice shots. What do you carry your camera gear in?

Excellent set, the expression in the second shot is priceless:D. The chap in number 5 looks very cool. You must have got very close to shoot these with a 50mm lens, I also be interested to hear how you carry your camera.

Dave.

A load of Canon Gear.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I usually take the lens off and then I can fit the body, nifty fifty and a small microfibre cloth in a 1150 Pelicase, which fits nicely in the back of my boat.

Your right Dave, even with the crop factor, 50mm is pretty close. I'm adding an 85mm 1.8 and a 30mm 1.4 to the mix soon, with the hope that those two will give me the flexibility I need, without taking up too much space :P

Great to see another whitewater kayaker on the board. I really like the tight crops and facial expressions although other kayakers have said they prefer to see more of the rapid in the pictures. You had to be pretty close to fill the frame with the 50mm, even on a crop sensor camera.

Nice to hear from you! Where are you from/where do you boat?

I agree with everything you said, thats why my next lenses are a shorter and a longer prime with the hope that I can carry those two and my 400D and cover most things.

I did crop most of the pics, I'm going to see if I can get the originals online so its easier to tell how close I was. However, I know #1 is basically SOOC, with a little sharpening.

I am in West Virginia, USA. There are many great whitewater rivers here. I paddle mostly the New River and Gauley River. I use the 5D mark II with the 24-105 f/4 and the 70-200 f/2.8

Very nice, do you fit that in your boat?

Pretty sure the 70-200mm is longer than my playboat :P

When I take the 5D2 in the boat, I just use the 24-105. They fit nicely in a watershed bag behind the seat. I take the 70-200 and sometimes 100-400 when I am not paddling but hiking down to a spot where I can shoot from the river bank.
When actualy shooting from the boat I use the Canon D10.
