How to get the star effect on lights?

Can any one tell me if its a special filter that is used to get a star effect on lights? Thanks :razz:

You could just stop down to f11 or so, I've had some nice six point starring that way.

Best method is stopping down more. When I first dabbled in 35mm photography I used a star filter and it softened the image a bit too, since the filter had all those criss-cross lines going through it.

Later I learned to stop down a bit more than what the accurate exposure should be helped create the points and did not bother the overall exposure.

Bear in mind that the points on your star effect is controlled by how many aperture blades your lens has.

Obviously, the caveat to stopping down is that shutter speeds slow, and you don't get as shallow a depth-of-field as you would with a filter.

It's really fun to play with though!
