Hi folks,

Just wondered what's best in the way of petal hoods for my new Canon 17-55mm IS lens.

Do I just go cheap as chips - is there really any difference between a non-branded one as opposed to a Canon one?

I'm assuming it would be best to get a reverse threaded one too so that I can remove it and re-thread it upside down for storage on the lens whilst in the case?

Thanks very much

Ian

The Canon hood designed for their EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens is the EW-83J. That is the only one I would suggest going for.

I would suggest buying one of the many clones of the EW-83J hood offered on eBay. The clones sell for under $10 US including shipping while the genuine Canon hood is in the neighborhood of $70. I own a number of clone hoods and a couple of the real Canon hoods. On the ones I own the anti-reflective coating on the inside of the Canon hoods is slightly better. Overall fit and finish is the same. To me, the difference is not significant and certain not worth the huge difference in price.

I would get the orig Canon hood. Didn't one come with your lens? The knockoffs I've seen don't have flocking on the inner surface to break up reflected light.

I tried one eBay clone for five bucks or so. Besides lacking the inner flocking, the plastic was really flexy. So much so, that I couldn't trust it to hold my lens upright, when placed top-down on a flat table. The Canon version is much more solid.

Unfortunately the lens doesnt come with a hood, a bit of a gripe for amny that spend a huge amount on it...

Thanks all for your advice - I thimk i'll just go with the Canon one :)
