I am tired of carrying around my 7d with 24-70 lens here in Germany and need something that takes high quality photos and is small / easy to deal with. I currently have a fujifilm finepix j150 that I used today and left the DSLR in the car cause I was just tired of lugging it. We do a ton of walking and it just gets too cumbersome to deal with In fact I used the iphone 4 camera today quite a bit too LOL

The cost of the camera is not an issue, I simply want the best PS camera that I can get. I know that there are personal opinions behind 'best' I have seen good reviews on the s90

What do you guys think?

Thanks
Robert

They don't call the 24-70 "The Brick" for no reason, time to start hitting the gym :P

A nice sling case my help but if it does not I also would take the 24 - 70 off your hands. I can start working out now just in case.

If money is no issue and by P&S you mean small enough to put in your pocket?...How about the 4/3 cameras from Olympus or Panasonic

Seems like the Canon S90 might be small enough and have enough quality to satisfy most of your requirements. No point and shoot will replace the quality of your 7D, especially if you are used to quality glass. You might also consider something in the m43 series, like the Pany GF1 or the new Oly E-PL1. Use the kit lens, and then maybe get the Pany 20/1.7 pancake lens. The Oly Pen series have in-body stabilization, while the Panys use in-lens stabilization.

If you don't mind something a little larger than the S90, but smaller than the m43 series (when zoom lenses are included), then I would recommend the Canon G11. The G11 lens is a little better than the S90, if you ignore the f/2.0 of the S90 at 28mm equiv.

Have you considered carrying your 7D with 24-70 lens in some other country then? If you're tired of carrying it in Germany, it might be different in Switzerland, for example? Perhaps Austria?

Just think about it before you sell it - many other nifty countries around.

Some good suggestions. Lots of choices. So it really is just a matter of preference.

If you want a pocket size camera (and you're OK without an optical viewfinder) I've only heard good things about the S90. My brother got one recently and says he hasn't used his Nikon D300 since.

The G11 is a bit larger, has an optical viewfinder and I'd guess better all around build quality.

Of the Canon P&S cameras, only those two have a bit larger sensor than the rest.

If a larger size isn't an issue, just weight, the SX20 (or something like the Fuji HC10) would give you a lot of versatility with their "superzoom" lenses.

The 4/3 format cameras look nice and have larger sensors than the point and shoot cameras. And again, if you can be satisfied without an optical viewfinder, those without prisms are very small for a camera with an interchangeable lens - but so far the choices of lenses is pretty limited unless you mount a full size lens on one which would seem to defeat the purpose if you are trying to get a lot smaller and lighter.

If you have the Iphone 4, doesn't it have a 5MP camera? That should be good enough (I don't know anything about the lens) for casual snapshots and it's with you all the time, so maybe that's enough for when you are not planning on needing a more "serious" camera.

I used to have a Canon S400 (got stolen). The 4MP on a tiny sensor still got great results when I used it to travel and didn't want to carry a big camera with me, but wanted to have a camera all the time (I bought it to take with me on a trip to parts of Asia I had never seen before.. I wore it on a belt case, but now they make much slimmer camera that can be more easily carried even in a small pocket. I replaced the S400 with an SD450 - it's a good deal smaller than the S400 was, but still big compared to what's available from companies like Casio and a bunch of others.

Leica makes a little point and shoot camera that I've heard is great, but I've never used one and don't know anyone who has one. But I was told by the guys that own the local camera store that it's a superb camera....they carry several brands of P&S cameras and only Nikon SLRs...The owners are 3 old pros and they seem very knowledgeable about their products. They don't carry Canon for whatever reason - so I don't know how the Leica compares to the G11...seems like a pretty similar type camera. Also about the same price.

Right now I own cameras in all sizes from larger than the 7D down to the old SD450. The camera I seem to get the most use out of for personal use is my SX10 ...it's not particularly small, but it is very light and I like the versatility of the 20x zoom. And the image quality is actually very good considering the small sensor and the extreme range off the zoom (the IS works very well and is very very quiet).

Best of luck,
D.

Wow, what a nice picture! You must have a really great camera!

It did not bother me when we were living in Turkey as much but here when we do travel around a bit differently so it makes it more of a pain, a lot more walking and more people so it gets bumped around more. Then when riding our bikes it is annoying as well. A PS would be a lot easier to use on a bike cause it can just go in my pocket. Also when we were living in Italy we did not ride bikes as much so that was easier to use the DSLR I had then.... I get where your comment was going and its cute but not that cute.

I'm surprised that people think the 24-70 is so heavy. But then again my lens choices are that and the 70-200 so I guess I have a different perspective.

I have found the Panasonic Lumix series to be a pretty decent pocket camera. But if money is no object and a G11 is the right size for you, you can't go wrong there (I would have gotten one but I just didn't want to spend that much money on something I only bring out in really crowded areas for random snaps).

Get the Canon G10. Fully manual and small.

I think you should go m4/3 - Olympus E-P2, Panasonic GF1, Sony NEX-3 or 5. Near the same image quality and DoF control at a much smaller size. Not really pocketable, but the best option if you want portability and quality.

Otherwise, a Canon S90. I feel like there's no point going for a G or LX3 if you can afford a m4/3 camera, because they aren't much larger but have much better image quality.

Or perhaps you should just get a 500D and 15-85? Smaller and lighter than a 7D and 24-70, anyway...

I'm very pleased with my S90 as most folks are with the camera/s they own. It's received great reviews and for good reason. I like it's full controls, RAW, F/2 lens, low light ability, image quality and size. I'm sure you're acquainted with the size, but have you held one? It's like going from Godzilla(7D) to Bambi.... It's about they same size as the Canon elph series. For biking it would be great. I'm not sure if this would be in addition or a replacement for the 7D. Hopefully you can have both. I surely miss my old 40D.

I do not find it to be too heavy and will be keeping it, its just after days of hauling it around it gets annoying. the 1diii and 70-200 do not bother me when using for a few hours or something like that but when going around town and in and out of buildings ect they become something to lug around instead of enjoying your time
