If this is something stoooopid on my part, I apologize in advance.

I've been running Photoshop CS5 (windows) on my machine since it officially released, and just today I finally got around to uninstalling CS4.

We'll, now I've lost all of my hooks into Photoshop. It doesn't come up in "edit" dialog on LR3, I've lost all explorer file associations, etc..

I'd appreciate any help.

Sounds like the un install has stripped associated files, suppose you could restore your pc to an earlier date, other than that uninstall CS5 and re install it HTH

Start Adobe Bridge and go to Edit > Preferences > File Type Associations.

Click the "Reset to Default Associations" Button and press OK.

I assumed he'd tried that first.

Just tried that. Didn't do anything for me. I can change things individually from there, but the reset all isn't having any effect.

You may need to reinstall LR3 -- I don't think there is a preference that you can change to re-point "Edit in Photoshop" (but I could be mistaken)...

I think the best course of action is solution #2 from the 2nd link I posted, followed by the adobe bridge tip listed earlier.

Hmm, this is interesting. I upgraded from CS4 to CS5 and all my file associations appeared to be okay in Bridge.

I then uninstalled CS4 and all the file associations in Bridge were lost and it looked as if I would have to individually re-set them. Wasn’t looking forward to this!

Instead, I inserted my CS5 installation disc and re-installed the software and then ran the Upgrade from within CS5 (Help – Updates) which then proceeded to re-install all the updates since my CS5 disc was manufactured and shipped.

After all the updates had downloaded, all the file associations in Bridge appeared to have been re-generated!

Cheers

Dennis

I read that was a possibility, it's actually solution #1 in my 2nd link. Personally, I'm comfortable editing the registry, and think it was much quicker to fix it that, once you know what is necessary of course.

No.

Removing the old version of photoshop, even though the new version is still installed, removes a registry entry that basically tells Windows about the existance of photoshop.exe, and the path to it.

Without that information, no file type associations can be made.

When you click on PSD file to access, your computer starts checking the associated file when it identify the file then it is known as File Association. But some time we fail to open the file because our computer fails to associate the file. At this situation all you need is a repair tool. PSD File Repair Tool can help you to fix PSD file association (external link). It can also repair corrupt, damaged or inaccessible PSD file layer after file association error.
