The previous had forward focused to a tree trunk about 5 feet in front of it. Canon AF never seems to be tight enough at the extreme range. I have to wait until Saturday to do direct comparisons to my 18-55mm IS copy, but this one looks pretty good. The reviews I've read (with crop shots) pretty much show the IQ is only marginally better than the 18-55mmIS, so I'm not expecting leaps and bounds improvement--most people are WAY too generous in their reviews.
