I'm looking at a lowepro lens case just to carry around my other lens without having to bring my bag with me. Biggest lens I have at the moment is the 35L. I'm probably not going to get anything much bigger than an 85L.

Anyone have an suggestions for a lens case to carry a lens, maybe a battery, or filter on their pants belt?

I would not attach a lens case to my pants belt. I would prefer to use a strap to the opposite shoulder, across the chest and back.

A lens case on a pants belt would be ok assuming it was a quality load bearing belt, like a custom leather 'duty' belt. A have dress belts that I wouldn't want any load strapped to it, but I have a few leather belts designed for use with a holstered gun (1-1/2" and 1-3/4" belts that are very thick).

I've carried lenses including my 100-400 in pouches on my belt. But the belt is a thick "rigger's belt" that was designed extra thick and stiff to be comfortable when carrying a holstered pistol.

As a general rule though, a separate belt is always going to be more convenient and more comfortable. Less risk of the belt's weight pulling your pants down when using the bathroom. Easier to take on and off when getting into a car or sitting down for dinner. It can be as thick and sturdy as you want with no worries about the belt fitting though the loops in your pants.

I am using a luggage strap with the quick release mechanism as belt for my camera case a while back...and now I am in the process of putting my lens cases on my belt also.

I have begun the hunt as well for a belt pouch that will hold the 70-200 2.8.

http://www.maxpedition.com …ing-Dump-Pouch-26p228.htm (external link) is one of the most flexible things you can find. Rolls up when not in use and is plenty large enough to hold the 100-400. Also works great for anything you want to keep easily available while shooting.

I actually do this all the time with my waist pack belt. I have two Lowe cases I thread thru the belt of my Northface pack and wear for short hikes when a full pack is not necessary. One is a short case and one fits a longer lens. Works great for quick lens changes when the camera is in my hands or around my neck. I most often use the larger case alone but sometimes fasten both on for more options. The velcro on the Lowepro cases is particularly strong and I have never had an issue with one coming loose. Toss a spare battery, memory card and a lens cloth in the pack and I'm set for short walks. Its been a great setup for birding in nice weather.
