The weather-sealed lens comes with a fixed lens hood and does not incorporate a filter thread. Priced at ¥123, 900 (~ US $1400) the Nikon mount will start shipping From August 6, 2010 while the Canon version will ship from mid-September.

Hmm, if after conversion the prices are similar or higher, I might pass. I was really interested in this lens if it was cheaper. But at that price a 14-24mm with adapter seems tempting

Cool, but this should go in lens section (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33) or news section (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=108) as this has nothing to do with bodies.

sounds interesting! I think Tokina has to beat the sharpness of the 16-35 first before it gets any sales...But yes, this thread should go to lens section.

Interesting. I wonder how it will compare to the present 16-35/2.8 II.

not only that, but this should have been a bump to the old threads in those sections (this was announced MONTHS ago):

"fixed lens hood and does not incorporate a filter thread"

This alone makes it very unattractive.

You do not have to have a filter for landscape shots - it really will depend on the weather and position of the sun in the end.

However - I'll agree that very often filters are very welcome for a better image :)

PJs will enjoy it. 2.8 FTW (however pretty expensive because of lack of thread and "only" 16-28).

The price seems fairly high for Tokina.

Also, I've noticed a load of 50-135s on Ebay lately. I guess they are making them again?

I'd say 90% of my landscape shots have a filter. Having no filter threads is a game breaker.

I've been hanging on to my 11-16 2.8 even after selling off most of my crop gear as it works very well on a 1.3 crop. But if their new 16-35 IQ is on par with the 11-16 and 12-24's I'll be getting one.
Tokina = good gear.

I guess that means no landscape photographers use the ever popular Nikon 14-24? Most serious landscape photographers I know use a filter holder and slide-in filters anyways (like Cokin X-pro), as they give you more control of your filtering, especially ND grad filters.

Being a wide angle junkie. this looks like an interesting lens. But I do like the size and low weight of the 11-16, and it works great on my FF setups at 16mm. I'd probably only use the 16-28 at 16mm anyhow.

Tokina = good gear.

It won't be nearly as wide as your 11-16 though!

It's almost as expensive as the 16-35LII, has less range, and filter incompatible. What's the point of this lens again?

A 14-24/2.8 for canon AF would be HUGE. I would go back to 1.3x for that lens alone.
