A couple of years ago I bought the best telephoto I could afford, a Canon 400mm f5/6L. I live outside of Yellowstone so I need something to capture animal action yet I needed to be able to still afford to go after purchasing a lens.
In the last two years this lens has really performed for me. On most grizzly and wolf shooting opportunities I am still full of lens envy as I look at some of the glass around me but there are a few advantages.
When you shoot a 500mm or 600mm you rarely get to get any scenery in your photo, you have fur or feathers and very little scenery. We 300mm and 400mm shooters get our close-up opportunities, however we have to be more persistent and patient.
I know that as soon as possible I will buy one of the big guns also but my fear is that I will leave it on the camera too much and miss some of the scenery I do find makes some of my wildlife shooting interesting.
The Canon 400 5/6L is only about $1,200 dollars and can get you close without spending multiple thousands for the next step up.

On this shot I got down on the ground and shot vertical to include the top of the Grand Tetons.

Once again I got down on the ground and shot vertical to include the top of the Grand Tetons. I never saw the Bluebird the grizzly was looking at until I got the photo onto the computer.

I love it when I can find animals on ridges with mountains in the background.
