Was looking at the Lowepro's Classified Sling 180 AW. My shoulder bag, Crumbler 7 Million, is taking a toll on my shoulder and back. What do you guys think of a sling bag for walking around and vacation bag? Anyone know if this bag will fit a 1Ds MK II? This is what I usually carry around...

-1Ds MK II
-28-70 attached w/hood, reversed
-70-200 f/2.8 non IS w/hood reversed
-Sigma 12-24
-15mm Fisheye
-550EX Speedlite

Thought I'd ask here first before trekking to Adorama or B&H with all of my gear :D Thanks guys!

Chris

That's a pretty heavy set you got there. I'd suggest a backpack. Maybe a Kata 3-n-1 series? You can make it either sling or backpack.

+1 That's a heap of gear for a sling bag, the largest I know of is the Tamrac Velocity range.
Suggest you leave some stuff behind, that will help the back and shoulders, if your only looking to walk around.

The Kata is a comprimise, it's not very good as a sling as the strap is not wide enough to spread the extra weight going through the single strap.
I always thought mine was about to snap due to the weight I was carrying, it felt like the strap was stretching and bouncing with each step.

This was a thread where some slings were discussed.

I agree with the others, I really did not like the sling with the gear that I was carrying. You should look into some backpacks. There are several that have the sling feature as well, but share the load across your back much better.

My 3n1-30 holds a lot of gear. When it's fully loaded down I wish the straps were a bit thicker.

Thanks guys! I really love my Crumpler 7 Mil. Maybe what I need to do is leave the 70-200 home. At least for vacations. I rarely use it. Lugged all I listed above except for the 70-200 on our trip to Nice this past Spring. Didn't have a problem the entire week. If i need the 70-200 then I'll have to use my Mini Trekker. Who am I kidding! I want a new bag

Yep, just to add one more voice--I would not carry that much gear in a sling bag, especially if you find that it's already exerting a serious toll on your shoulders and back.

I have a sling bag that I rarely use because I don't want to fill it up too much (it gets heavy quickly). I love the easy access, but it's not a solution to shoulder/back pain.

If you really want to carry lots of gear, and access isn't essential, a backpack is probably your best bet--it's just not a great bag to shoot out of.

If you didn't have a large pro body, the ThinkTank Rotation 360 would sound intriguing (though I don't own it).

Hi Chris, I have a LowePro Mini Trekker and love it. I carry my 50D, backup Rebel ETi, 70-200 f4L, 18-55 f2.8 EF-S, 580EXii, 4-sets of AA batteries, a couple of manuals, a charger and an extra battery for my 50D plus the usual cleaning gear. It works great but it's a bit heavy as you well know from your list of gear. I'm headed to Yellowstone National Park next week and decided to leave my Rebel, 580EXii and AA batteries in the car in an older camera bag. I can't image leaving my 70-200L at home. It's my favorite lens but it's heavy. I considered one of the Tamrac slings but decided to cut back on some the gear I haul into the field and buy a Black Rapid RS-4 camera strap (expected any day now). I hope the combination will reduce the neck and shoulder strain. Let us know what you decide to do. Good luck!

There's a new article posted on the Adorama Learning Center, Chris:

This next one was put up about 6 weeks go, and looks at bags especially for travelling around:

This is one of my favorites; it gives you a chance to take a look inside the bags of several photographers to see what they haul around with them!

If you want a sling type bag, I would suggest the Tamrac Velocity 9 or 10. I can carry most of that in your gear list mentioned above. I have no issues with comfort since it has a waist strap to help with support. Changing lenses is pretty easy for me since the bag stays in front of me and the profile isn't as bulky like backpack. YMMV.:)

I have this one:

You can also attach accessories on the bag depending on what you need(flash pouch, lens pouch, water bottle holder). I have the MX5385 that fits a 580 EX II.

I've decided to stick with the Crumpler 7 mIl. I love it too much not to use it  It'll be my walk around bag, less gear. If I need everything then I'll go with my Mini Trekker.

Yellowstone National Park, I'm so jealous!!!!! You're going to have a GREAT time! For a trip like this I would also use my Mini Trekker. It's a trip where you can't afford to leave anything home. I mostly use my Mini Trekker when I shoot architectural stuff for my office. It's just easier. I've deiced to keep using the Crumpler for walking around where I know I won't need to 70-200.

Have a GREAT time in Yellowstone!
