I currently have a 5D and my new 7D. Ever since I got the 7D, I haven't touched the 5D. Problem is my lenses are tailored to FF. I LOVE the 7D and all the features. It is sheer pleasure to use.

My plan was to use the 7D as more of a general-purpose camera and take the 5D when I need 2 bodies (i.e. weddings).

Has anyone done a comparison of 5D to 7D in terms of IQ and Noise? I've seen one review that compares 5D2 to 7D but in real life I haven't seen vast differences.

Also, what do you guys think of switching up my lenses:
24-105 -> 15-85
12-24 -> 8-16 or 11-16
And maybe:
50 1.4 -> 30 1.4

The advantages I see are the larger range on the 15-85 (136mm eq.), and f/2.8 on the Tokina.

In a wedding situation I would use the 15-85 on the 7D and 70-300 on the 5D, or 50 on the 5D and 100 macro on the 7D.

Decisions, decisions....

I would keep the 5d. It would go no place especially for use on group and bridal formals. what i would do is either get a 17-55 or a 15-85 for the 7d and in all honesty a 10-22 is awesome on the 7d. and with a flash, 3.5 easily gets the job done, and your 50mm turns into a perfect portrait lens. i used the 24-105 for a couple of years but ran into some really dark venues last year so i switched to the 24-70. glad i did. hope that helps.

you can probably tell, i really like having both formats, especially for weddings.

My main consideration is the lenses, not likely getting rid of the 5D.

If I got the 10-22 in favor of the 12-24, then I could probably keep the 24-105, but I would then lose the W-I-D-E ability of the 12-24 on the 5D.

I like the all-in-one ability of the 15-85....

Maybe this:

5D: 12-24, 50 1.4, 70-300
7D: 15-85, 100 macro

How are you liking the 10-22? I want to get one, but its that or the 17-55 2.8. Not sure how much I would use the 10mm, I really need to rent one.

I have been very impressed with my 7D in low light, it has exceeded my expectations. My first dance recital in really crappy light and with no strobes and here is the result: http://www.themainedanceacademy.com …b_gallery_2010/index.html (external link)

I shoot lots of action of all kinds so excellent fast AF is critical but the 7D seems to do everything well when paired with good glass.

Here's what I am thinking now.

24-105 switch to 15-85
50 1.4 switch for 28 1.8 and 85 1.8 (or 28 1.8 and 50 1.8 since my macro is so close in FL)

For travel, I take the 7D with 15-85 and optionally the 55-250
For portraits or events, the 5D gets the 12-24, 28, 85, or 70-200.

Thoughts?

What if.... the 5D3 comes out by the end of the year and it has the new AF on it? Would you then get the 5D3? And would you ditch the old 5D? or ditch the 7D?

That would affect what lenses you keep. Just food for thought.

(BTW, you'd have to pry the 7D off my cold, dead hands.)

No way are you crazy. The 7D is an awesome camera. I would take a 7D over a 5D or 5D2 any day. Though I'd go for the 17-55 over the 15-85. Full frame is overrated.

I could always switch back. BTW, how do you like having both a 100 macro and 85 prime? Too much overlap?

I just switched from FF (D700) to the 7D.

But, if you're shooting weddings for money, you NEED a backup body IMHO... So if you sell the 5D, you'll need to get another body just for that. Here's what I'd do in your shoes though:

24-105: sell for a 16-35 2.8. Yes I normally yell at people for using that lens on a cropper, but, it'd be you UWA on FF and your midrange zoom on the 5D.
the other option is to get the 11-16mm. It's a sweet UWA on crop, and @16mm it works on FF as a nice wide prime.

As for primes, whatever you get, make sure it's FF compatible. So consider the 28mm which is ~40mm on crop and wider on FF. The 50 would be an ~85 on crop. Just look at the dual FL options of any prime on both formats. Having 2 sensor sizes in your bag and lenses that play nice on both gives you TWICE the FL coverage.

I am also seriously thinking of switching back to crop. I find I do alot of low light sporting events and wildlife so the reach of the crop and superior ISO of the 7D will be very useful. I can always pickup a 5Dc if I don't like my portraits but the DOF can be very closely duplicated with a proper lens.

See, I'm the opposite. I've loved my time with the 7D (having gone from a 5D classic) but am having the desire to go back to the 5Dc or 5DII. There was something beautiful about the simplicity that was the 5Dc (especially since I'm primarily a landscape/travel/portrait photographer). So, who knows.

Canon has sold so many 5DII bodies I don't think they will be upgrading the next version too much. It would canibilize the 1DIV or eventual 1DsIV. I'm not even convinced that the 7D's autofocus will transfer over to the 5DIII. If it did they couldn't make them fast enough.

I have both the 7D and 5D, here are my observations:

-The 7D's colors look more vibrant
-The 5D at ISO 1600 is buttery smooth compared to the the 7D
-The 7D's user interface is outstanding
-The 7D has auto ISO which the 5D doesn't
-When I hold the 7D I shoot much faster.
-Setup, burst speeds, adjustments etc are a lot quicker with the 7D
-The pictures from the 5D are buttery smooth at every ISO setting
-With my 17-40mm the 5D is ridiculously wide
-Portraits that come from the 5D are amazing
