Tripod question 1/4 or 3/8

I carnt see anying here on whether one should pick a tripod / monpod with 1/4 or 3/8th some have both but some only have 1/4 .
Then theres the little addapter that changes the thread
im just wondering if it really matters or should one go for 3/8 with lenses like the 500 f4 .
i would like to get thoughts on this.

Don't let this decide which tripod you're getting. If you have a 3/8 tripod but a 1/4 head, work around it by getting a cheap... thingy (screw-in converter). Nothing to worry about AFAIK

If you buy a decent quality tripod there should be a bushing (for lack of a better word) that comes with the tripod/head that will allow use of both sies.

some mono/tripods come with a reversible stud that's 1/4 on one side and 3/8 on the other.

the only thing to consider is if the unit is only 1/4" -- i.e. it requires and adapter -- it's pretty lightweight.
