Oh, its yet another media player, and the masses rejoiced.

However this one, as well as doing all the media player stuff, sports a compact flash slot. Could be very nice as a field backup solution.

$400 for 30Gb with some top notch extras. So, from those who already have field backup solutions, how does this compare?

Figured I'd add a picture. Seeing it with a CF card wedged in the end gives a great idea for just how small this thing is.

Fine with me as I can't be bothered with RAW. Question is does only supporting jpeg mean you can't copy any other file formats on there, or just that it can't display them?

Not sure......
I beleive you will be able to download anything and transfer to your computer.
You just won't be able to view them.
The OS is not setup to view...but should be able to copy.

This will peev you guys right off. It did for me...well apart from the not haveing RAW support.

Quote from here: http://www.pcmag.com …le2/0,1895,1843921,00.asp (external link)
"The device supports images in JPEG (progressive and baseline) formats up to 8 megapixels"

Yep. 8 MP, not sure if that extends to 8.1 or 8.2 but it says 8MP. now that really bites. (maybe they will have a firmware update to support more....and RAW too.

but damn its a really nice unit.

JPEG's from the 20D are only 3-3.5Mb in size at the Highest quility.
Should not be a problem.

I think you mean MB (megabytes). The largest JPEGs I get are around 6.3MB, but if the specification says 8 megapixel than I guess it's limited by the dimensions of the image. The 20D JPEGs are 3504 x 2336 pixels which is 8.2 megapixel. Guess someone will just have to buy one and report back! It'd certainly be nice to have an alternative to the P-2000, even if it doesn't display RAW.

well it looks cool... better than the epson. they will have to correct those couple of flaws quickly though. I saw that thing yesterday and thought, wow, some epson competition... But from what you guys just said, its still lacking. I just got a photo dump... wish i could have afforded the epson. :-(

Still think the Epson P-2000 is the best for viewing pics.

I have NEVER gotten Highest Quality JPEG's bigger than 3.5MB!!!!
The 8.2MP Canon 20D does not mean you are going to get 8.2MB files.
8.2MP vs. 8.2MB is Not the same thing.

From Canon's website:

(1) Large/Fine: Approx. 3.6 MB (3504x2336 pixels)
(2) Large/Normal: Approx. 1.8 MB (3504x2336 pixels)
(3) Medium/Fine: Approx. 2.2 MB (2544x1696 pixels)
(4) Medium/Normal: Approx. 1.1 MB (2544x1696 pixels)
(5) Small/Fine: Approx. 1.2 MB (1752x1168 pixels)
(6) Small/Normal: Approx. 0.6 MB (1752x1168 pixels
(7) RAW (3504x2336 pixels): 8.7MB RAW + Small/Normal: Approx. 9.3 MB RAW + Small/Fine: Approx. 9.9 MB RAW + Medium/Normal: Approx. 9.8 MB RAW + Medium/Fine: Approx. 10.9 MB RAW + Large/Normal: Approx. 10.5 MB RAW + Large/Fine: Approx. 12.3 MB * Exact file sizes depend on the subject and ISO speed.

Right, and the quoted review spelled out "megapixels".

OK, here is a very quick feature comparison with the P2000
Epson P2000 - 3.8", 640x480, 262,144 color screen. 40Gb HDD. Supports Jpg and Raw (partially) at up to 8.9MP (or 17.8 if you upgrade firmware). $500.
Creative Vision - 3.7", 640x480, 262,144 color screen. 30Gb HDD. Supports Jpg only at up to 8MP. $400.

Hopefully a firmware update on the vision could catch it up to the P2000, but a firmware update on something that isn't on the shelves yet is a little too much to ask. Of course the Vision handles audio and video much better and offers so PIM stuff. Thing is, I want it for storage and review of photos primarily. I think the biggest thing for me though (currently shooting 6MP jpgs) would be the $100 cheaper price.
