I was thinking of picking up a 28mm f/1.8 for some wide shots. With the fast aperture, you could use lower ISO/shutter speed and get some good results. Would this be a good choice?

And as the title says, what's your favorite lens to use?

I've got a 28mm f/2.8, but hardly ever use it...perhaps because it's an FD mount rather than EF, (though yes, I do have an adapter so that I *can* use it!). I suppose I use my 18-200mm most, at 18mm, for my wide angle shots. But actually I think my favourite is my Nifty Fifty.

For a long time, I was using my 35mm f/1.4L lens. On a crop body, it gives just enough field of view (~55 mm equiv) for most constellations. If you want fast glass, then primes are great.

However, once I purchased my 24-70mm f/2.8L, I have generally been using that over the 35mm. I just find it so much more convenient to be able to set my FOV. I only revert to the 35mm when I'm pressed for time or really need the fast glass. For example, the image below was taken with the 35mm wide open without a tracking mount so that I could capture the dipper over the local observatory. 15 sec at ISO 200. Anything longer and I saw trails, anything shorter and the stars didn't come out.

I considered the 28mm f/1.8 but went for the 35mm f/2 because I read that it was sharper round the edges. It's also quite a bit cheaper.

It's just wide enough for many constellations, but not really wide enough for a big milky way shot, on an APS-C body that is.
