The film or sensor is square, but the lenses are round. Like round peg in a square hole?

I was asked this and didnt know 100% why. I assumed it was because how the glass is made.

 sorry for the dumb question

It's to do with the way light enters the lens evenly. A circle allows an even consistency for light to enter; a square wouldn't.

Sorry I can't be more scientific than that.

Why are sensors rectangular - making us toss all that good light top-n-bottom?

No, you will still get vignetting, it's just that it will be round the entire circumference of the image rather than just the corners ;)

This sounds like one of those interview question ask my Microsoft.

Here is my guess. The lens body is round such that you can turn the focus or zoom ring, unless the lens design is like the 100-400L where it is a pumping action. So, if the lens body is round, then it is more natural to make the lens round also ... just my guess.

Maybe that's why our eyes are round while our vision is kinda in a box, kinda

Circular lenses make everything easier, from production to function. Think about it!
