1Ds mk II weather sealing failed in conditions where it shouldn't have?

Today I used my 1Ds mk II for the first time while it was raining for about 45 minutes and it started to malfunction.

The rain was light except for the last 10 minutes when it was like this (shutter speed 1/25). It was slightly heavier than the average rain in here but still nothing terrible. Shouldn't 1Ds be able to handle this?

The last 5 minutes of the heavier rain, I spent under a bus stop that protected me and the camera and there I was first not always able to browse the photos I had taken. Then the camera didn't always react to many of the buttons (both dials, shutter worked but I was not able to half press it). I turned the camera off and when I turned it back on, it took a burst of photos. After that it started to be evident that this was something more serious and I turned it off and went to dry indoors.

The camera was bought second hand from a company that is world famous in Finland. Before the sale it was checked by local Canon service. During the checking three seals were replaced among other things so they have had a look at the sealing.

Before the rain got heavier, I didn't even feel getting wet and you can see her clothes look more dry than wet:

Now I've removed battery, memory card and EF 24-105 (that had UV filter) from the camera and let them dry. Tomorrow I'll go to the store where I bought it. They give one month "guarantee" for second hand stuff. Whatever that means.

I think I used the camera in conditions that shouldn't be a problem for it. What do you think? Have you had similar experiences?

LOL :)

I am unsure of the weather sealing on it. The last bit of rain looks fairly torrential though and as it is an older camera I guess seals are more than likely to be past it (if they didn't change all the seals some might have had it).

If I had bought the camera from a private person I probably wouldn't have trusted the seals except in an emergency but since it was checked by the Canon service and since they had replaced some seals I should be able to trust it more.

At the store I was given the impression that during the first month of use the camera should behave like a new camera.

I've shot in rain like that for hours at a time (Vancouver, BC) with the 1Ds2 without any malfunctions. Sorry to hear it.

Never had problems in rain or being splashed completely by waves with my 1DII with the 24-70L on it, with filter. Is the rear lens gasket good on your 24-105L?

24-105's seal looks almost like new. The lens has been in the rain a few times with a 1D mk II.

Did you find any water in the battery or card compartments? In the lens mount?

I felt a very small amount of moisture in the battery compartment and on the lens mount (on the lens side, camera side was dry).

While handling the camera indoors, I accidentally put my thumb inside the battery compartment so that might be the source of moisture there.

Card and its compartment were dry.

That's pretty much irrelevant though...the 1D-series is almost 100% water proof. I know of people that have dropped their 1D in water (into a lake or pool) and even after 10-20 seconds the camera comes out completely fine. There's a reason this camera is used for a lot of sports and nature photography...it can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Sorry Derek but I disagree. With the exception of underwater or waterproof compacts cameras, NO (WATER RESISTANT) CAMERA should be subject to anything more than some accidental water spillage or short exposures to light rain.

Definitely some issues. Nah, that's nothing. I have shot in a storm in a bike race for 6 hours. I was with my 1dmarkIII. The body wasn't not protected at all. It is still fine now.

A year ago I got a permanently fogged viewfinder with 1D mk II while shooting in light rain for about an hour. The person from Canon service I talked with said that the sealing of the camera should have definitely handled that. Later they said that none of the seals had failed. The fogged viewfinder screen had to be replaced.

I understand that 1D(s) cameras are not water-proof but still they should be able to handle plenty of rain. Lot's of events wouldn't have been documented if 35 mins of light rain and 5 mins of proper rain would be too much for them.

One of my favorite pictures of the 1D

If it can handle that, I don't think a little rain would be a problem. They're built to take abuse and not fail.

Sorry to hear about your issue. Hope you get it fixed!
