Is there anything to be gained by going with 2 TT5 instead of 1 and a TT1?

the only reasons I see to get the TT1 are size and $20-ish in savings

But I prefer the battery system in the TT5...

I liked the size of the TT1 so that's why I went with it. If I had it to do over, I might have just bought all TT5's.

The one advantage I can think of for the tt5 is that is uses standard AA batteries. The Mini TT1 uses more of a watch style battery so I suggest having a spare in your bag. You can't pop into a gas station and pick one up on the way to a shoot. :)

I own a TT1 and 3 TT5 units. I like the size of the Mini as it does not get in the way at all.

I committed to 3 x Flex TT5 because:
1.> batteries are identical
2.> hardware is identical
3.> convenient to remember - (1 x camera + 2 x flashguns - 3 Radio Triggers - therefore 3 x TT5's)
4.> Firmware upgrade - applied to only one type of device
5.> Feature-set and learning is the same
6.> interchange-ability - any TT5 works anywhere for anything

Just an FYI. I believe the firmware upgrade you mentioned is a non issue. It's been a while, bit I am pretty sure that when you plug in the unit, the software detects the device type and does the work.

Update:
Went to my local camera shop - they sorta know me now, been there many times, get most prints from there, and my 70-200 came from there...
I asked the guy for a pair of TT5's... then he asked me what gear I had, how I was going to use it, etc...
told him 40D and 2 flashes... right away he said I'll need 3, or those 2 and a mini, to make it all work, unless I was ok with just using 1 flash.
Told him 1 body, 2 TT5 units will be enough to make me fire off both flashes.

His response was "Can't happen. Tell you what. Make it work, and I'll give you 10% off this order"

I got him to pull out all the gear needed. And I clarified that all I needed to do was light up both flashes at the same time, on the same shot, using only the body, two TT5s and two flashes.

Then he went to get someone else that works there... told him what I wanted to do, and he agreed with the other guy, it won't happen.

Then I clarified the deal... 10% off the order, and the other guy said "may as well make it 20% because it's not going to happen"

I shook on the 20%

They watched me mount a flash on each of the TT5 units, and the 2nd guy said "see, this is where you'll see you can't trigger them, you need a 3rd unit to trigger them"

Then I heard their jaws hit the floor when I mounted one on the body...

The 1st guy right away said "well played. We never specified they had to be triggered off-camera." before I even finished setting things up...

I took advantage of the 20% off, and bought 5 TT5's....

(5 @20% - that's basically paying for 4 and getting a free one, and then selling the 2 that I don't need - so in the end, I'll have paid for the 2 I wanted to get, but will own 3!)

I only bought flextt5 and no Mini. I like that all units use the same batteries and that a flex may be used to transmit or receive.
