Depends on what they want to do. I have the Canon WC-DC58B .75x 58mm, and it works very well with the G9. I am also now using it with my G11, but it is not optimized for the G11, so the results are mixed. Raynox is another popular converter lens for the G9, and you can add filters to their models, since they have a threaded end. The Canon converters do not have end threads, so you cannot add filters. Here's a link on Lensmate with information on wide converters for the G9. They will also need an adapter tube to attached the lens to the camera body. Lensmate makes a good adapter for the G9, but there are other sources too.

Here are some shots I took using the Canon .75x wide converter.

Like Den I use the Canon WC-DC58B (0.75x). My view would also be that it is not perfect, but the results are more than adequate and usable in many situations. There are a number of other options available and you do not have to spend a fortune. The great thing is they are built around a filter attachment size, rather than a dedicated camera mount, so you can easily look across the various brands. In this country there seem to be plenty of second-hand units around on eBay and in the better camera shops.

This is an interesting site – www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/index.html (external link) - while not new, it does list some alternatives and options. The following pages may be useful…

When I was looking I was tempted by the Raynox (a lot lighter/smaller than the Canon unit) and the Sony (VCL DH0758 0.7X again in 58mm), but I did not test or use either, as I found a Canon WC-DC58B at a great price. Do the others improve the pictures, I don’t know, but the weight of the Raynox is still very tempting - I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has experience and comments on using one with a G camera...

Den - you may find this of interest, it is about center blur, when fitting converters - http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/index.html (external link)

Here's the way the G9 looks with the Lensmate adapter and Canon auxiliary wide angle lens: http://lightdescription.blogspot.com …angle-converter-lens.html (external link)

See these

Lensmate adapter: titanium, very light and much sturdier than the default Canon attachment, which is plastic, i believe

Raynox wide angle lens: it is considered one of the higher quality WA attachments for the G9, and goes wider than Canon's own.

I have not looked at eBay in a long time, but these prices seem very competitive with what you can get there.

depending on the subject, stitching may be a more appropriate solution.

Honestly, for the price of those adapters, you'd almost be better off just getting a second or different compact that goes to 25 or 28mm.
