Please, I would love to see some side by side photos. Thanks

This should show you the size difference pretty well:

As you can see, they're very close except for the laptop compartment. Hope that helps, let me know if you want any other photos.

The 40 does look much more compact. Is it the same getting the camera in and out? What I mean the ease to get it in and out? does the 40 have a back pocket?

thanks for the pics, they do help.

It is, considerably more.

Yea, the camera portion of the bags is essentially the same.

They both have a zippered pocket in the back that can fit papers or a magazine, something like that. They also both have a zippered sleeve so you can use it over the handle of a rolling bag.

Tommy--I just bought a '40.
My need--an everyday bag that has a small footprint. I'll carry it in the footwell of our Miata, passenger side. Works for me as passenger. Doesn't work for my wife when she's not driving. ;) It really isn't much different from my Tenba Messenger. I needed a new bag. ;)

I have the Tenba and the UD50. I love the UD50, fits everything I need for gear and the laptop. The Tenba is too small for the 5D2 with lenses. The UD bags are really roomy with a zipper. The Tenba is not so stretchy. Depending on your budget and the style of the bag, they are very different bags.

Thanks Suzie. The Tenba? Couldn't put my d80 + grip in it. I can put my d300s in--barely. It works far better for my G11 and other stuff. The UD40 is in a different league. Good use of space; great quality. Works well with my dslr and walk around lenses.
My post could have been misleading to others; thanks for your post.

I'd instead look at the Retrospective 10, 20 or 30. I have a UD35 and while nice, it is not as nice nor as easy to carry as the Retrospective bags.

Dave, the UD40 is very nice, I ended up holding off for now since I have the R-10 I really don't need it.

The problem with the nice bags is the cost. Nothing is cheap that is worth buying. The Think Tanks are amazing bags. Well worth the money if you plan to use the bag a lot. I love my Domke F-802, which is large and can fit a netbook, but not a larger laptop. If I am doing a pro shoot without the laptop, that's the bag I take. If I need the laptop, I take the TT. There's no perfect bag, unfortunately.

Suzy--cost is crazy here in Canada. Domke F3X ruggedwear was $217 at Henry's. Tax extra. They wanted over $40 for the postal pad! Tommy's R-10 goes out the door for about $250 here. Check out the ThinkTank site. Shipping to Canada? They say check the Canadian stores. They list every Henry's store. However, try to find TT at Henry's? Headshots, and (sometimes) the Mississauga store. Mississauga used to stock Domke (but not accessories, because they cost too much?) but now they don't. It's a shell game.

Free Trade? Excellent Canadian site.... www.photoprice.ca (external link) has saved me lots of money on cameras. I saved a little negotiating at Henry's for bags. Things have changed. Years ago my business gear came from Henry's because there was a cost savings, and service was good then. Nikon and Leica pro gear.

The internet makes the world a smaller place. So it hurts seeing what others pay and the price penalty buying and supporting Canadian stores.
Thanks for your post.
