im thinking about picking up a 5d classic. if i do what will i be loosing out on going from the 50d? i know its less fps, but that isnt a huge concern as i dont shoot much in high speed burst anyways. the lower mp count doesnt bother me either. i shoot mostly family and friend functions, church events, and some high school sports.

5Dc won't be as good for shooting sports because of the slower AF system. Also the screen is 2.5" on the 5Dc. Your 50D has a 3" screen which is also much brighter and displays better colors and a higher pixel count.

Micro adjust. If you like prime lenses, either you return the lens (pay for shipping insured) or send it to Canon for calibration. Same thing goes for 3rd part lenses. 5D classic is not capable of adjusting those problem lenses.

The only reason to keep the 50d is sports.

I had both at one point and the 50d never left my bag unless I was shooting sports, which is a rare moment for me. 5d image quality is just leaps better.

how badly will the 5d do in a sports setting?

Depends on the kind of sport.

I shot these with my 5d:

seems like it did a good job there. most of the sports shooting i do (which is limited) is high school football, lacrosse, etc. maybe some mior league baseball. almost all of my shooting is portrait, landscape, and event

I'd rather have the 5D for that.

would a 1ds be a better compromise?

It's pretty weak in the high ISO department. (If you're talking about the 1DS classic.)

I found that the center point on the 5d to be just as fast and accurate as the 50d. So if you primarily use the center AF point then it shouldn't be an issue. The other AF points on the 5d aren't very good for fast moving objects especially in low light. But I also upgraded from the 50d to the 5d and was quite pleased.

The 1ds has a better AF but at iso800 the IQ is not very good.

Those shots have a huge depth of field, though. Don't need fast/accurate AF for that. :)

But that's just a comment about the required camera capabilities. The shots themselves are fantastic! I really like the first one.

 I was hoping that would kind of fly under the radar. The 5d does sports wonderfully...like I said, depending on the sport!

I actually think they were all manually focused.

:p

And thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. Glad you liked them.
