Okay so I am driving myself mad trying to decide what to do here. I have pretty much made my mind up, but decided to put it out for opinions... What is anyones opinion of using a 5D Mark II to shoot sports action?

Currently I am shooting with a 50D and 1D Mark II. For football, baseball, softball, track, and soccer my set up is the 1D on a monopod with a 400mm 2.8 and the 50D on my shoulder with a 70-200mm 2.8. For basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and swimming I will use either body with the 70-200mm 2.8.

I know that the 5D mk II burst rate is slower than either body that I have, but I am not sure that it will matter that much.

Opinons???

Equipment list: Canon 1Dx, Canon 1D mk III, 50D, 400mm 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L, 17-40 4.0L, 24-105 4.0L IS, Sigma 15mm 2.8 FE, (2) 580EX II

Why would you want to? You have the 50D and the 1D2
I wouldn't get a 5D for sports...ever. Just rent a 5D2 and take it to a couple games and give it a try, I think you will find the keeper rate much higher with what you have.

I guess that I forgot to add that I also shoot weddings, seniors, and assignments for the paper... I am thinking that I am going to go with a 1D Mark III to replace the mk II that is about to pass away. I was a little surprised to see the amount of hating on the 50D.

If you only could use one camera for everything then the 1D3 gets my vote. Both a 1D and a 5D2 would be the ideal setup for you I think .
Oh, and the 50D is an awesome camera...I don't know who's "Hating" on it, but I would just ignore them ;).

I know it will never happen, but I would like to see Canon release the long wished for 3D that is a FF, with a D3s resolution, ISO, and frame rate. Never going to happen but I can continue to wish....

I current have the 1D MK2N and a 40D. For what you are describing they work fine.

If you added weddings I would agree with the 1D MK3. It is a great camera and would handle all of your needs that way.

I'd agree on the 5D2 and 1D3 as ideal. I wouldn't let burst rate be your guide as I feel that should be pretty low on the priority list for features. The AF would be a much bigger concern and the 1D3 is going to be tough to be amongst the three you list. ISO performance on that body is fantastic and if you are shooting indoors where the 1D3 doesn't get you where you need to be in terms of ISO, you'll probably be shooting flash anyway. What I do like about the 5D2 is the ability to shoot HD video which more and more PJ's are doing. Our local paper guys all carry one now since they are often required to shoot both still and video on assignment. The 5D2 keeps you right in the game with that and is also a great body for your wedding work where flash might not be appropriate in some instances. Bottom line, I am not hating on the 50D but if I were in your shoes, I'd sell the 50D, keep the4 1D2 and add some cash for the 5D2. You won't get much value for the 1D2 now anyway and its still a very capable body even in poor light so it doesn't make much sense to me to sell that one given the work you do.

That is exactly my line of thinking... Burst rate is not that big of a deal to me. Wen I shoot sports inside I actually have a few Alien Bees B800's that I set up and bounce off the ceiling. I am just looking for opinions....

I have the 1D2, used to have the 50D and the 50D was no slouch by any means. But it doesn't compare to a 1D for sports. I am in the same boat, starting to get into senior and family portraits and weddings and also am thinking about getting a 5D (1 or 2) and upgrading to a 1D3 for better ISO. I loved my 50D, but I don't miss it at all. I think a 1D and 5D would be a great combo!!!
