So I was experimenting today. One TT1 on the 5DMRII, one each TT5 on TWO 580EXII. Each on the same channel (1) and each on their own zone (A, B) ..So..what did they APPERAR not to fire in sync? Were my eyes deceiving me? This happened both in ETTL and manual mode!! Thanks?

Did you look at the final shot to make sure all flashes fired. Don't rely on your eye.

trouble shooting approach I use:
Make sure all the Control TL devices are configured the same.
Make sure they are communicating for flash. That is different than seeing the pre-flash.
The only way to know for sure is to turn them on one at a time and fire off a shot.
If the subject is lit by the flash being tested it is generally obvious.

Since you have 580EXIIs do you have the AC5 foot and sock installed?
If there is a noise problem, the pre-flash may occur without the exposure flash occurring.
I think that happens because the noise is from the flash firing and the wink flash is not powerful enough to cause interference while the exposing flash is.

The flash you see in the viewfinder is the pre-flash.

NO SOCK needed..close in shooting 10 feet away. It may be the preflash that I am seeing. I had spots in front of my eyes all night...not a good idea! I still dotn get why both have to be on seperate 'zones' but on the same channel.!

What did you have mounted on the TT1 to act as Master? The only time your two "slave" 580's are set to different zones is when you want to use output ratios between the two and if that's the case then you need another 580 on the TT1 as Master in order to set and/or adjust zone ratios. Otherwise, shooting with no Master then both the TT5's should be set to Zone A and will fire simultaneously.

Cheers.
