Hello all,

I am about to purchase a used GT3540XLS. Any reason why I should spend the extra on its successor, the GT3541XLS??

Thanks for your input.

You should replace "predecessor" with "successor". Very confusing (:

You've done a spec-comparison I presume?

Woops... edited... thanks. I can't find any difference in the specs I've found. Both seem to weigh approx 4.4 lbs, min height of 4", max of 78" (which is why I need this model), load capacity of 39 lbs, carbon fiber, and 4 leg sections. Anything I'm missing? It is hard to find reliable information on the older 3540.

As far as I'm aware, the only additions on the 3541 are the facility to put a weight hook under the support plate and a new friction pad on the top surface.

FWIW, I use a 3540XLS with my 600/4 and occasionally the 300/2.8 and am more than happy with it.

Thanks Bob,

It's comforting to hear you have had success with the longer telephotos on this tripod. I went ahead and purchased the used 3540. I figured the $300 savings could be put to better use elsewhere.

I heard the newer 3541 can achieve a lower minimum height (which would be critical if you do a lot of ground work) but I don't know if this is true. As far the friction plate is concerned, I'm sure I can devise my own solution if it becomes a problem. :)

I've been using my 3540XLS and wimberly wh200 for 3+ years with my 500 f/4 and its a great tripod for super telephoto lenses. My friend has the same set-up for his 600 f/4 and 300-800 Sigma. I can't see how the 3541XLS can have a lower min. height as the 3540 legs
can rotate to 90 degs.

Nice! Must be an inaccurate rumor then...can't wait to get it in the mail. I've been using the WRONG tripod for too many years.
