WOW! Canon G6 and 420ex What a Combo!

I just took my first shots with the 420ex on my G6 WOW! is all I can say!, Before indoor photos looked like a yellow crappy pic now they look like they are taken outdoors, for you that have not got a 420 yet for your G6 what are you waiting on, bought mine at crutchfield for $249.99 I know I could have got it cheaper but they have free shipping excellent customer service and I broke it down to 4 payments on my credit card, so The big chuck did not hurt me, but I higly recomend this setup,

When I added the 420EX to my G3 it opened a new world.

can you share how do you use your 420ex. What setings on the camera? Doyou bounce the flash off the wall?....etc..

I use it on P mode and on AV mode I have my apeture set t 4.0, The flash I put it at a 45degree angle and bounce it off the ceiling, and sometimes I turn it and bounce it off the wall and ceiling give it a try you will be surprised,

Thank you john, I have tried those settings and bounced from the wall, but I can never achieve anything close on manual mode...have you tried using it on M....if you did, can you get the same results or maybe better than on P or Av mode?

420 EX is one of the best investments you can make to your G-series camera. Also, it carries over just as well when you upgrade to a digital SLR. Can be had relatively cheap nowadays, new or used in the $150-175 range.

Proud G5 owner here with a 20D as my "workhorse." I have to say that my G5 with either a 420 or 580 produces some excellent photos.... I would actually put them up against a 20D any day... I bet my whole camera collection that folks would be hard-pressed to guess which is which.....

Now I am also the happy user G6 and 420EX combination. Bought 420EX today, had time to do only some test shots at home with light bouncing from a ceiling. What a result! I am impressed! Need to try attached a white card olso, have been told that that could be even better!

Stofen Omnibounce works well too, but there's no substitute for bouncing light off a ceiling, assuming the ceiling is close enough and light in color. In a pinch you can diffuse the light with several layers of tissue.

Artan... stop using M mode right now.

Use Av mode and set it to at least f/4.0, although I usually use f/5.6. I was getting too many out-of-focus shots with P mode because the camera was choosing f/2.0. Despite the deep depth of field of these cameras at any aperture, the f/2.0 was problematic in flash, at least for me.

The 420EX is pretty brainless. Toss the user manual, put it on the camera, aim it various things and fire away. With a tripod especially, you should be able to learn all you need to know in 30 minutes of experimentation.

I use a Sto-fen Omnibounce with good results, either aimed straight at the person if there's no wall behind them to catch a shadow, or angled upward (even if there's no ceiling).

I lost my Stofen Omnibounce . I need to get one soon, or fashion one from a yoghurt container. Another tip, try dragging the shutter. This means firing the flash with slow speed, around 1/30 or 1/15 (experiment!). The results from this technique are often interesting.

How can you lose your Omnibounce? It's hard to get on and nearly impossible to get off. (You didn't have it on, did you? You let that expensive piece of plastic roam around in your bag unattended.)

Ah, the old yoghurt container. That's what I always use when I want to impress my clients. Just the sight of it relaxes them, knowing they're in professional hands.

Lol Don! I should have left it on the flash. During an anniversary party I was covering, I put it in my pocket and somehow it must have fallen out. I can't bring myself to get a new one, so I'll be looking in the supermarkets for a nice cointainer that can be used as a diffuser. Hmmm I think I will expand the search to shampoo and talcum powder containers too.

Try two glad disposable containers glued together with a hole cut in the bottom of one to stick the flash into. It's amazing the quality of light you get from it. Will smoothly light up a whole room.
