I actually use the flash in daylight as much as I do at night. Here is my 11 year old daughter in the shade and another in strong light. In bright light, the flash keeps the shadows from showing too harshly.

Good pictures! In the first, have you used just straigt flash without any additional devices?

I used the 420ex. No extender bracket. Turned down in camera.

Now G6 looks like a monster! The body is less visible :-)

Looks like the tail wagging the dog, doesn't it? It does look impressive.

OMG, Andrey, you don't go out of the house with that lame neck strap, do you? You need a genuine P.O.T.N. neck strap.

Nice pics!
Could you be more specific on your flash settings and did you have the omni bounce on in the pics?

I have struggled at times with the 420ex seemingly being to "harsh".

TIA

Joe

If I remember correctly I had the flash turned down a full stop for daylight fill. I did it in the main menu screen. Due to the poor documentation, I have never figured out any of the settings on the flash, except not to turn it to (lightning sign) H. I guess it doesn't matter because it works perfectly controlled by the camera.

And yes, I pretty much always use the OmniBounce.

Thanks for the info.
If I can ask one more question....
Do you point the falsh straight on with the OmniBounce on outdoors? Or whenever there isn't something to bounce it against?

Yes, I just use the Omnibounce as a diffuser.

If you will look at my pbase site and look in the gallery "My daughter Kate", you will see a bunch more that I took with the flash. Be advised this was my first attempt at daylight flash photography. I was happy with it but I see some things I would have done differently. It was a hot day and some of the shots have a little shine. It may be that a reflector would be better but it's a hassle if you don't have a dedicated reflector person.

I've been missing my G2. Placed a bit on a G5 on eBay so we'll see.
The 20D is excellent in its responsivity but it is big and no way to conceal it.

Two different worlds, why not take the best of them.
Probably the 580 EX will work as well?

Artan... stop using M mode right now. :)

Use Av mode and set it to at least f/4.0, although I usually use f/5.6. I was getting too many out-of-focus shots with P mode because the camera was choosing f/2.0. Despite the deep depth of field of these cameras at any aperture, the f/2.0 was problematic in flash, at least for me.

The 420EX is pretty brainless. Toss the user manual, put it on the camera, aim it various things and fire away. With a tripod especially, you should be able to learn all you need to know in 30 minutes of experimentation.

I use a Sto-fen Omnibounce with good results, either aimed straight at the person if there's no wall behind them to catch a shadow, or angled upward (even if there's no ceiling).

Cheers,

Don

When you use the 420EX indoors, what are you setting the white balance at ??

I've had mixed results -- if it's pure indoor lighting it seems OK with AWB, but if there is indoor lighting and daylight coming in, then AWB results in a yellow cast.

Thanks.

Shouldn't you use the "Flash" WB setting when using the 420EX? I'm asking along with you, not saying that is necessarily the answer.

Can you post a pic with the strap attached to your G6. It looks so "wide" for the G6, but never saw one attached to it.

TIA
