Hi everyone

Sorry for my lame questions but I honestly do not understand what a camera grip is.

Is it for battery back up ? I saw some online and saw that 2 batteries can go in them do they come with the batteries or do you have to buy them separately ?

I have a 20d and wanted to know do they still make grips for this model

Thanks !

It attaches to the bottom of the camera and adds grip and battery life to the camera.

It doubles the capacity (2 batteries can be used at once) as well as making it easier to hold the camera vertically (it adds a grip and shutter button).

Grips for the 20D can be found on Amazon with or without batteries.

Hope this helps! :)

Seems like I used to get 1200-1500 shots or so on a set of batteries while shooting a high school track meet. Check SterlingTek.com. Their batteries are reasonably priced and a good company to do business with. The extra weight helps balance out the camera and lens. Really handy for shooting portrait orientation.

This is true. If you want to save money, you can buy a third party grip (Opteka, Zeikos, Flashpoint or many others) and buy 2 SterlingTek batteries. I'm considering going this route with my XSi.

Are the "third party" grips just as good as the original Canon BG-E5's? I really want to grip my XSi. Last night I was shooting with a 100mm macro and the 580EXii. Vertical shots would def be easier with a grip!

Some of the third party grips basically are the Canon grip without the logo on but there are quite a few other types - some with a differently shaped grip, some lacking any buttons and some with differently designed battery areas.

For xD/xxD cameras, it's best to use the Canon grips, due to some weather sealing on the camera grip. So for non xD/xxD cameras, non OEM (3rd party) grips are fine.

Except for the WFT wireless "radio" grips which look roughly the same, don’t add an extra battery but use one instead and otherwise do the other stuff above. Oh and they do the wireless thing too.

Oh and my standard battery grip has a cartridge that allows you to drive the camera off AA batteries which I can't foresee using myself but some people travelling where there's no mains power might.
