I just downloaded the new version of DSS and tried to extract the files. Windows told me it blocked the file to protect my computer. Anyone have this problem? Any ideas how to install the program? Why is windows 7 such a baby sitter

3.3.2 downloaded fine on my XP SP3 machine, reading DSS page I assume Win7 has this "GDI+" installed? If not could that be your issue?
Good luck.

Supported platforms: Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista, Windows 7
(it may work with Windows 98 and Windows NT 4 but I never tested these platforms and I can't guarantee it).
GDI+ must be installed. If you are not using Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server or Windows Vista, click here to download GDI+ for your platform
(GDI+ is already installed with Windows XP, Vista and 2003 Server)

Not sure but it will not extract the MSI file for nothing. Guess I can burn the images to DVD, then take them up to my sisters PC stack them, bring them back down and do my usual tweaks on them.

What a PITA

Worked fine for me, turn off your firewall maybe? It should give you a choice to block it or not on windows 7, I am running it on windows 7 just fine.

Same for me on Windows 7 Pro.

Things to try: Make sure you're logged on as an administrator, run in compatibility mode, turn off the nagging "Are you sure you want to do this" thing in Windows.

Hi, I will have to locate and download this version to see what the extension is. You may have an EXE, that will extract somewhere. Windows 7 will babysit the Programs, Windows folder structures and root of the drive.

Best is to create c:\TEMP - copy the file in there and then - right click "Run as admin" or click on start - search and type CMD. Windows 7 will search for CMD.exe. You will see it in the list, then right click on that and "Run As admin".

Say yes on the warning and an admin command prompt will open. Type cd c:\temp

This will take you to the temp folder if you created that. Then use the TAB key or just type the name of your file.

If it is a permission thing, this will sort it out.

Back again. I downloaded the 3.3.2 file and it is a ZIP file. It extracted without a problem to c:\temp\dss, which I created in the UI - no commandline stuff. Two files extract - setup and setupDSS. First one is the application and the second one the installer. Zip file is 10.2 MB in size.

I suspect you have a broken ZIP file or one that came form an unknown source.

same crap. Different downloads, folders, even hard drives. it REFUSES to extract the damn files. Right clicking does no good. I downloaded it right from the DSS web site.

OK, this has nothing to do with security permissions. Can you right click on the ZIP file and see if there is an "Unblock" option under Properties. You have a feature enabled that marks all content coming from the Internet as unsafe if it has an executable file in the ZIP. It has to do with protecting you against unsafe ZIP files. You should be able to flag a ZIP file as safe, by right clicking on it and then select Properties and look for an Unblock option. Bottom right.

I will see if I can locate the area where you configure this option.

Owning the file normally makes it safe as well. The fact that you downloaded the file from the Internet makes it unsafe. You can also try changing the ownership to yourself. Properties of the file, Security TAB - use the Advanced Button. There will we an Ownership TAB. Use the Edit option and change the Ownership. Use "Apply" (alter it to admin and then back to yourself)

Hi, I don't know how well you know the Group Policy Editor, but here goes. Windows has this editor to modify the policies you use. This feature is governed by Zone Information on File Attachements. You can disable this feature, but then all content will not be flagged with information where it came from. You then have content that looks safe. This will allow you to unzip anything, "the risk is yours".

I will rather go with the manual unblock feature in the properties of the file.

Okay, this is pissing me off. Really. its a simple program and windows refuses to extract the files.

I turned off windows defender.
I right clicked on the zip file, changed the permission in the security to "FULL CONTROL"
According to the tab, I AM the owner of the file

Even rebooted my PC, re downloaded the file to a new directory. ITS THE SAME THING.
it will NOT EXTRACT the files

Its going in the trash can and farther drives me away from the hobby of astrophotography. Im sick of this crap.

Windows 7 is the biggest baby sitter I have ever seen

I finally got it installed. An annoying work around. I downloaded it to my sisters PC, extracted the files, saved the extracted files to a SD card, saved the two files up on my PC and it installed, no problem

:-) I don't see anything about unblocking the file :-)

Glad you got it installed, but do note that any ZIP file with an executable inside the ZIP may do the same. It is deemed unsafe and you will need to UNBLOCK it on the general TAB. Open the properties of the file.

have fun.
