Just wondering if anyone made the move and if it's worth it.
Currently I have 500d (T1i) which I use mainly for bird shots with 100-400 L IS.
Or would the heavier 7D make more sense?
Grateful for comments.

I don't personally think going from a T1i to a T2i would be worth it unless you want to get into shooting video. The 7D would be much more of an upgrade, especially with its autofocus system and low light capabilities.

T1i already has video though it is better on the T2i so if you want manual controls, higher frame rate and an external mic jack then the T2i is an improvement for video.

For birds you want better AF speed, so I say 7D or 1D for best results, 40D or 50D for a more modest improvement. I like the 1D but others love the 7D.

As someone who went from T1i to 7D, you'll be more amazed at that. I'm not a video guy and while I've done video on the T1i a few times and can appreciate the new features on the T2i, the limited buffer of the T2i in photography is a turnoff and there's nothing else really that much improved.

I think the biggest change with the 7D is the build and the AF system when upgrading from a Rebel. You'll appreciate it instantly. Plus the frame rate is nice. I've held the T2i many times and I honestly can't see a day to day improvement in my photography... if video work is what you do the T2i might be a lot better with an external mic, but other than that... meh.

I wanted to also praise the 7D's excellent servo AF system. I don't think you'll get better tracking capabilities of birds and stuff. The Rebel will give you ok performance if you stick to center point and that's about it.

Id also say no. I wouldn't think it would be worth upgrading unless it had more benefit than what you would get from T1i to T2i

The video capabilities don't interest me all that much; but the comments about the 7D in relation to buffer, focus etc. make it seem like a better move.
Thanks to all who contributed.
