POTN is fast moving enough it's as good as a chat room, as far as I'm concerned. Besides, chatrooms are usually just that - "chat." It's difficult to have meaningful discussion with multiple participants when the text is constantly scrolling across the screen.

There are a few thread around that do move very quickly, hundreds of posts per thread and in essence they are working like a chat room. Nice thing about threads is that you can go back and catch up. Not everyone is in the same time zone and threads allow you to basically chat with those on the other side of the globe.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Hi rooster - basically what Don said.

The place is fairly fast moving and typically you will get responses in minutes to most questions. Your exact same suggestion has come up at least one other time by somebody else.... and it died pretty quickly. That's not a criticism and it's not a bad suggestion; just that POTN's don't seem to function that way for the most part.

I do see a major disadvantage though. "Chat" tends to be ephemeral. Actual threads and topics can be easily searched, noted, and references. I don't believe you'd be able to handle chat well in that fashion. A lot of really good stuff gets discussed here, and checking topic headers is a nice way to find things.

Not bad - just don't think you will get many takers.

It's actually a good idea, in theory. It's just that it'd be overwhelmingly difficult to keep up.
