I recently picked up a 400L and decided to try and do some birding. After a couple of outings, I can tell that birding can be a very addicting hobby! I thought I would share my first birding setup and would appreciate any tips, critiques etc.

1. First, I'll start with my blind. I bought a Killzone 2 person chair blind. It has a built in camp chair that seats two people. Even though I only shoot by myself, I bought the two person version so that I could take my wife with me or my son when he gets older. The blind seems to be built decent and is very easy to set up. The netting on the front sticks out a little bit too far to put around my lens, so I zip up half the opening and leave half the net attached. This gives me an area to shoot through and some concealment on the front as shown here....

2. Here is a perch I built. There is a nest on the corner of my house and birds will travel along the fence I have in the middle of my yard and fly up to the nest. I placed a couple of sticks I found at a local creek on the fence with a small water bowl.

3. here is a shot to give an idea of the distance between the blind and perch. I might move the blind closer next time since I did have to do a little bit more cropping than I thought I would.

Nice results! The only thing you didn't mention was the track of the sun from morning to evening. Hopefully, your 'magic perch' is in a spot that gets good light either early in the morning at late in the evening.

Good luck with the setup and keep posting!

You make a good point on that. The lighting will actually be ideal in the mornings, since the object being photographed will be front lit. I'll probably be setting up some perches in different locations for different times of day. Thanks for the insight.
