So I am about to buy this filter. Does anyone know if there are threads on this for a lens cap? I know there has been some discussion about lens caps and thin filters.

Thanks

Most likely not...I have the 77mm thin-mount Vari-N-Duo, which does not have front threads. Best bet is to call Singh-Ray direct (they're very helpful), but I would bet that it doesn't.

Hmm. Now I am curious if that is even the filter that I want. I want the Vari-N-Duo, but I guess this one may not be the one. Is this one the same as the Vari-N-Duo? ->LINK (external link)<-

It appears to look like the standard mount.

No, that's just the standard variable neutral density filter. The Vari-N-Duo combines an integral warming polarizer. AFAIK, the standard Vari-ND is not compatible with a separate polarizer (at least from what I heard). Try the Singh-Ray website...lots more info available and, since I believe that B&H sells for the same price as S-R, why not just go to the source? They're very helpful...I initially bought the standard Vari-N-Duo, but didn't care for the vignetting. I sent it back and S-R re-mounted it for me into the thin mount...

Thanks. I am so glad you told me that. I had that wrong one in my cart ready to buy.

Not a problem...glad you found out before dropping $400... ;)

I will say though...the Vari-N-Duo is a quality piece of gear. It may seem expensive at first blush, but when you factor in the cost of high quality, individual filters (warming polarizer, multiple ND's), the price pretty much washes out. I now have several specialty filters from S-R, and I can't say enough good things about them. Quality gear, and a quality company with excellent customer service.

Thanks everyone. I just ordered the correct one. And you are right about the combined pricing. So will this take the place of all my other ND filters (Not the GND, but the ND)

I cannot wait to try it out.

I wouldn't completely say yes bcoz' Lee also has the "Big Stopper" which reduces 10 stops of light and imo is the best ND out now. While your SR is a nice piece and presents no color cast, the Lee is a nice addition to the collection. The blue cast from the Lee is easily corrected in PP and definitely worth the price tag. It's just a popular item atm but, is definitely worth the wait. :)

thanks

On my 17-40L/5D2, the thin-mount Vari-N-Duo stops vignetting at about 25mm. The standard Vari-N-Duo vignettes up to about 35mm on the same setup.

How bad is the vignetting at say 20mm? Unusable or fixable?
Thanks

I guess I meant the correct one in that it was the one I had intended to order.
