Which camera to buy: XS or T1i

I plan on buying my first dslr camera this month. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the XS or T1i. I believe there is about a $200 or $300 difference in price. My question is it worth the extra money for T1i? What have your experiences been with the XS and/or T1i.

Any advice is appreciated as far as which camera to buy.

I bought a XS as my first DSLR about 3 weeks and love it

definitely worth the price. well worth the extra couple hundred imo, just go to a camera store and try themm i think the build quality of the t1i alone is enough to warrant the price. xs is good if you are a hoobyist/family pix type of person, but if you want to be able to expand further i would make the initial investment now since it probably will be a hassle later on to upgrade once you outgrow the xs.

I don't plan on making a career from photography, but i do love it as a hobby.

my 1st dslr was an XS it was pretty good for its price. i think its best to buy a used XS and save u some money then spend money on lens. since its just a hobby i mena if u want the Video then i guess the T1i is for u but for basic photo shooting XS is pretty good for its price

i too love it as a hobby and went with the cheapest canon out there (with tons of research of course)
got a refubished XS from adorama camera and has been perfect so far
i was uncomfortable buying refurb at first
but the reviews on refurb products from adorama were awesome
you wouldnt be able to tell if was refurb by the way it looked.
and it only had 20 shutter actuations

you can use the hundreds saved to purchase a lens other than the kit x)
perhaps the 'nifty fifty' or the 'nifty two-fifty'

no brainer having had both in the past... T1i... much better quality plus video... it's a great little camera... xs is about obsolete...

if you don;t intend to shoot video or already have videa camera, and if money is tight, then go for the XS. But like focus.pocus said, it is obsolete, and the XSi is a better camera cf to XS.
You will be spending money on lenses, so, I would use the extra difference in money to invest in lenses ( if money is tight)

If you want video then T1i. IQ is the same unless you move to a 7d or T2i. IQ was just as good as my 50d. XS is hardly obsolete, but then again I shoot with a 5d which must be absolutely archaic. I'd put the money saved towards other lenses. XS+18-55IS+55-250IS and maybe 50/1.8 for the price of the T1i+18-55IS would give you more range and versatility.

The T1i is obviously a better camera in most regards (Except for ISO 100-1600 picture quality) but make sure you can still get lenses and a flash before you spend it all on the body.

If low light or video (sub par) is your game then T1i, if not save your money and go XS, XSI.

If you want to be a photographer, get the XS. If you want some silly video option that IMO should not even be on a DSLR, then get the T1i.

People saying the XS is obsolete are people who aren't doing research. The XS has been put up against the T1i on a few sites and the IQ is almost the same, except in some fields the XS out performs it in sharpness.

I think as your first camera you should pick up the XS, use the extra money that you'd save from buying a T1i on a lens, or a flash; or just save it for better glass. After building up some glass, and if you want to keep going; then save up for a body higher than the T1i; the 40d, 50d, or even higher.

I like the XS, but that is just a ridiculous statement. The T1i has all the same still photography features (and a couple minor extras) than the XS.

The T1i has a nicer screen and video. The value of video depends on what you think... but the price difference would be better spent on lenses- as many people have already said. The kit lens is fine, but you'll get better pictures buying an XS and a nicer lens than if you bought the T1i and just used the kit lens.

Cheap lenses with good value... the 55-250mm, the 50mm f/1.8 and/or the 50mm f/1.4.

As far as the XS being obsolete... I don't agree. It has live view, it has good resolution, it has good ISO noise levels, it has everything the 50D has except the build heftiness and ISO range (is the 50D obsolete?). The XSi is basically the same as the XS with a nicer screen, except that it is discontinued, while the XS is not discontinued, so you probably will not find a new XSi for cheap. But if you can find it used, then go for it.

The refurbished XS cameras on Adorama look like a good deal...
