I would like to add a question to this topic if the OP doesn't mind, would an extension tube added to an existing macro setup be beneficial? I have the Tamron 90mm macro

jc450d - both. you can use the tubes with the 50 to get to 1:1
and with the 100 macro to get to 2:1
but the price difference between the tubes and the 100 are different for sure. the 100 used/refurbished in is the neighborhood of the $450-$500 and the kenko tubes new are around the $160-170. or is there something to this question that I am missing?

mknabster - see above. tubes with macro 90mm would make the max magnification approx 2:1

In your opinion, is it worth getting them? I'm trying to get closer to small bugs and thus get more detail from them as well.

Yes it is worth getting a set to use with the Tamron - a full set will give you over 2:1 magnification with that lens. You start seeing good definition on fly eyes around 1.5:1
