Great result Tyler. I'd be tempted to chop a sky in that has something going in in it too, just a little cloud formations etc.. I think it would help the image..

I've just hired this little beauty for tomorrows building visit :)

So are you guys using a monopod for your flash when using this technique? I've been itching to try it out.

Mike, would you mind posting your flash setup?

I seen the technique that Mike used and yes he uses a monopod.

I was just thinking, to get to those hard to reach areas to pop a flash would it be possible to somehow connect a flash to one of those remote controlled helicopter things that cameras can be attached to. Sorry, don't remember the name of the device and too lazy to look it up right now.

Funny you mention that because that is what I wanted to do and my client said he liked it this way. I showed him this and told him I was going to add a really cool sky and he said 'I don't want anything taking away from my home, and like this my home is what stands out the most.' I may do it just for myself. ;)

I guess it depends on how hard to reach. Without the grid, I could stand at the street and light up a large portion of the house with my 580ex II (I didn't use any of those but I wanted to see how it would come out) I used the grid more for the plants and no grid for most of the walls. I was anywhere from 10' to 20' from some of the walls when I popped the flash. Then, in PS, I took the flash frame and used is as a layer. Then I used a really soft brush to shape the light effect as if I was standing closer. I would assume that you could do the same even on a two story home, just get back further, pop the flash over a larger area than you need, then shape it and adjust the opacity on that layer to make it look as if you were closer to it. It think it would be easier than trying to fly a helicopter with a flash attached....just my opinion.

Don't go overboard with it, but I think something in the sky would help.

I just have on Honl 1/4 grid. It slides right on to the end of the flash and like I mentioned, I just hand held it. I used a wireless shutter release and two Cactus V transceivers. One on the camera and one on the flash I was holding. The wireless shutter release allowed me to walk around and hit all the areas without having to go back and forth. I did the first few and checked to see how they were coming out, then after than I just went through and lit up everything I thought needed it. Then, I did a quick scan on the camera of the images to make sure I got everything. I didn't do any kind of setup and shoot from the camera, that would take way too long to go back and forth like that.

A house I shot today in Berkeley, CA. And now I just realized I forgot to clone out the ugly spots from my dirty my 5D sensor.

Shot with a Canon 5D x 17-40L x Cactus V5 triggers x Yongnuo 560 x remote release.
