I hope we don't regret the decision. It is a big step up from printing on one of those little HP photo thingies (technical term).

Any advice for the A3 printer newbies?

Photo shops color management works best for me.
Calibrate your monitor
Ilford smooth pearl is what I print on, go to Ilford for the ICC profile for the printer/paper combo.
It was a real convoluted learning curve to get things working correctly, but well worth it.

For third party paper, make sure it's designated for pigment inks.

Make sure you get your printing technique nailed down with standard, inexpensive Canon paper before trying third party fine art media. You don't want to use expensive third party paper for experiments.

Much thanks! When I looked at the per sheet price for any of the fine art papers I could see what those are only for final copies after test prints on something much less expensive. ;)

I have been using the Canon 9500 for about a year now. Getting beautiful results using Ilford smooth pearl paper and letting photoshop manage color.

Mainly Permajet (Oyster), with some Hahnemuhle, and hardly any Canon.

How close does the softproof come to final output?

If your screen is profiled, mine is, the results I am getting are spot on.

I just started using red river paper. I was hesitant at first, but i took a chance and bought 100 8x10 and 20 11x14 sheets on my first order of arctic polar satin. I was blown away by the prints. Im definitely sticking to this company. the prints were spot on. What i saw on my monitor is what Im seeing in print.

Hi,

I have used this paper also, on both colour & B/W images, go to ilford.com and download and install the profile for this paper, if you have this already on your system, it may be a bad copy, I have had good quality screen to printer matching and good quality prints on this paper.
