Hi guys, I just got a 16-35L and it came with a Hoya HMC UV. The guy purchased it from BH, have the receipt, everything checks out. However, the filter is made in the Philippines. Is that right? I though all Hoyas are made in Japan. There's no way this filter didn't come from BH, I'm certain of it but I'm very surprised to see where it was manufactured. Can anybody confirm?

Perhaps Hoya has a lower end line as seems to be the trend with companies to compete .

Well this one costs only $5 less than the popular Pro 1 multi coated. This is also multi coated ... I don't know. I trust BH and I doubt they'd sell junk. I just never saw another Hoya made in the Philippines.

I do know that some parts of camera gears, like tamron's bayonet hood on the 18-270 are made in the Philippines.

Hm, interesting. Thanks for that. The back of the box says it was made in the Philippines by Tokina Co. Another thing I didn't know that Hoya is associated with Tokina.

oh if its made by TOKINA, then it probably is made right here in CEBU (where I am). there is a Tokina plant just a few kilometers from where I am right now, inside the Mactan Economic Processing Zone (MEPZ)

So if it is made by your homeboys down where you are, then it should be legit. I may sell it and get a Pro 1 anyways ...

Hmmm. I'm wondering if my cousins work in any of the manufacturing companies. I hope to get a discount.

I have a Hoya HMC UV that's made in Philippines as well, also a Hoya standard CPL made in Philippines, both brought through Amazon.com. I think maybe Hoya is moving its manufacturing to Philippines save for the top of line model (Pro 1, HMC Super, HD).

However, the filter is made in the Philippines. Is that right?

Does it matter?

Assuming it's not a counterfeit, if it's good enough for Hoya to put their name on it, why should it matter where it's made?

There are a lot of people out there who pay good money for these things ($120-$160 for pro1 D CPLs) and expect the best quality. When it comes to glass, Japan is the first thing that comes to mind. I'd much rather have my filters stamped with "made in japan", quality be darned.

On first thought, a lot of people will probably think they've gotten a fake.

well yes, I do want all my equipments to be made in japan also  except that some companies really needs to cut back on LABOR cost.

I find that one of the biggest difference in manufacturing cost is LABOR cost. we have very cheap labor here...at around $5.5/day for most factory workers or minimum wage earners.

That alone will definitely allow those companies to lower their prices and at the same time gain more profit compared to manufacturing them in japan/europe/US or other developed countries.
