I got a couple P singh-ray GND filters along with a slim holder (but I have been known to just hand hold the filters to the lens) Anyway, while looking for a 3 stop reverse I started to wonder if I should I should just up the size to 4x6 and sell my smaller P sized filters to help off set the cost

I am sure shooting with a P sized filter (or two) hand holding them at 16mm on the 5DmkII is going to cause some serious vignetting. I suspect even 24mm would show a nice dark ring around the filters.

Anyone use P sized filters with their full frame cameras? Should I get a 4x6 filter next or just stick with the Ps?

The issue is what lenses will you be using on your 5DmkII and what size filter threads does it have? Generally speaking the P size filter holder will work fine with lenses having a 77mm filter thread. Cokin does sell an 82mm adpater, but the central hole of the adapter may limit the potential vignetting. Also Cokin does sell a (1) slot P size filter holder in order to minimize holder depth, and potential vignetting on very WA lenses. On my older P holder I have cut off everything beyond 2 slots for the same reason (and to make it slimmer in the bag).
Nearly all larger Canon L lenses use 77mm threads, so P filter holders will work fine. Common lenses that are 82mm filter threads include: Zeiss Distagon 18 & 21 ZE lenses, Canon 16-35 f2.8 II, Canon TSE 24 f3.5 II. I would go with the Cokin Z or Lee holders (both use 4x6" filters) if your lens comes with 82mm threads.

I have used my older P size GND filters on lenses with 82mm threads; the solution is to hand hold them over the end of the lens.

Handholding a stack of two filters will also increase the risk of scratching the filters. And when the opportunity does arise where two filters are needed, having a single slot holder won't fit the bill.

My recommendation would be to sell of the P-sized filters if you can, and go with the larger 100mm filters...since their S-R, and if they're in good shape (no scratches), you should be able to get a fairly good price.

I use the Lee holder...at 17mm on my 5D2, I don't get any vignetting from the holder with all three slots installed. You should see the same at 16mm (provided that you use the wide angle adapter ring).

I would definitely size up to the 4x6 filters. You also should get that Lee holder too. :)

You are correct. I own a 16-35 + a cokin p filter holder and at 16mm the filter holder is in the shot. At 20mm which is what you guessed was absolutely correct in that the filter/holder is no longer in the frame. Sure you can hand hold filters, but the risk of dropping them increases if you are hand holding the camera and filter at the same time.

Should not be too hard to find the 77mm adapter ring... its sitting right under my computer monitor :)

I just tried two filters on my 5DmkII with the tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 at 16mm and while I was able to use both filters at the same time, the edge of the filter holder was in the frame... big time.
