I am just wondering... life would have been so much easier if Canon and Nikon offers International warranty just like Apple does...

any thoughts?

My sister just bought a Macbook Pro in Singapore, knowing that it has International Warranty... but I can't do the same for my gears as Canon and Nikon won't honor gray units.

Perhaps so that you can't go to another country where the items are much cheaper and bring them back, thus taking profit away from your local Canon outfit...

I am not really sure if thats the reason though... wherever, whenever you buy a canon, it is still a canon...

You do realise that you probably got it cheaper due to taxation and that you are supposed to pay the duty when you arrive back?

Things are done differently in the Philippines. Citizens tend to take pride in dodging custom charges and **** about tax evaders. Double standards? :))

well we could just ditch the boxes and not declare the item to the custom as newly bought...

and singapore is doing tax refund on electronic items too...so whatever taxes you are going to pay coming into the philippines will likely be offset by the tax refund

shhh.... hehehehe of course we do.. ;)

but that's not the point of the thread though... sometimes we can't find the gear we want in our homeland, but we can't buy at B&H, Adorama or anywhere else because of warranty issues. Unlike Apple, you can certainly buy from anywhere you want and still have warranty covered when you go back home.

While true the cost difference is pretty substantial. I figure I saved almost $1100 CDN on my 5DMk2 buying it in Beijing. I may not have an "international" warranty but thankfully my local camera shop and myself have a good relationship to iron those things out.

The other thing is can you imagine what it would be like for the repair center in say New Jersey to get bombarded with all these Chinese warranty cards and try to process them? :)

Apple doesn't have to deal with the whole grey market issue :)

In a sense yeah but the mobile phone industry has the same thing where you can usually get a phone over in Asia 3-5 months before it lands on the shores of North America but you'e SOL warranty wise.

I'd be willing to bet if you rang up Canon and said you purchased a camera overseas when you were on A) business B) school or C) military assignment and now you've moved back they'd probably check the S/N and say you're fine if you're under the warranty period.

uhhmm maybe yes on some occasion... but I doubt Canon Philippines will do that, specially in a market where consumer rights are not really the #1 concern.

Everything's available here... you just need to wait for days, weeks or even months for it to arrive. And the prices defy logic. :D

The segmentation's more to protect markets than anything else.

Apple on the other hand really takes their company motto seriously. What's Apple's company motto you may ask?

I recently purchased a Canon 550D and two lenses in St. Maarten, in the Caribbean. It does come with an international warranty. My warranty is issued through Canon Latin America division, whose address is located in Miami, Florida. I haven't needed to use it yet, (hopefully won't). I am assuming that I would probably have to mail my equipment to wherever they service Latin American purchased Canon cameras if needed. I have to think that there are camera purchasers all over the world that get a warranty when they purchase abroad.
