Recently fledged pied-billed grebes like to ride on the parents backs. Families consist of 3 to 4 young. Here, a parent entices young with a fresh catch. You know kids, they're hungry.

This is just one of 5 to 6 families of pied-billed grebes at the storm management pond along Aquaview Drive in Orleans (east end of Ottawa). This is the last family to fledge in June. Good photo ops from spring into summer as various pied-billed grebe families fledge. Best place to photograph Pied-billed Grebes in Ottawa.

The pond is located on Aquaview and is bordered on the one side by Lakepoint Drive and Silverado Crescent on the other side. Pond is just across the street from Silverado Crescent.

Those chicks are so cute! This is a such a nice shot, I can feel the anticipation of the chicks as the parent nears with the food. You caught a special moment, well done!

Thanks Steve. The chicks climb or slide right off the back to get at the food. The parent bird will pass the fish around ande see which youngster is game enough to try swallowing it. It takes them several tries to swallow the fish.

Very nice shot. The kids ride up there cause a passing trout or walleye would make short work of them if they were in the water.

Yes, that's what happens to a lot of them, Blue Herons get the rest. I have seen large fish hanging out under birds nests that are built over water, just waiting for one to fall in. Big fish are as smart as birds. ;)
