Can you ask Canon to refurbish an EOS DSLR or lens?

I've seen a few comments on the web about sending Canon a DSLR body to have them refurbish it. Can you really do that? Would it come back looking like new as if you bought a refurbished DSLR body from Adorama or some other place?

I know I could call Canon and ask, but was wondering if anyone has actually done this and what their experience was. How much did it cost? How long did it take? Did it arrive in like new condition? Do they repair/replace items that are scratched/dinged/worn (cosmetic issues) that don't affect operation?

If it can be done, I assume it could be expensive to do this compared to buying a refurb from Adorama or just getting a new body or lens. Although, it might be worth it if you can get a really good deal on a used body or lens that works ok but shows lots of wear.

I imagine as long as you pay, they would do the work, or maybe offer you a swop for an already refurbed one (at a price).

Why, what have you done to it?

Canon are not the only camera/lens repairers in the world. There are many excellent third party repairers who would be pleased to have the work if Canon get sniffy about it.
