I spent last weekend photographing a civil war reenactment, and some of neatest shots I took were these 5 second expos of the cannons firing at night. I had 4 shots to get it down> Next time a ND filter will be used to cut the brightness down a bit. I know the fireball is blown but the detail is still in the cannon operators so I ok with them. 15 ft from 1 pound of black powder going off is a rush:D

holy cow is what i said the first time they fired... what a thud! I could have used a shorter shutter speed but since it was hard to judge the exact time it would fire I went for 5 second, I was able to hear the ready to fire yell and click then brace for the kaboom, I recomend anyone to photoshoot a civil war days event if you have the chance. If you would like to see more from this event check these out.

How on Earth did you take that "Ghost" shot? It's wonderful and I'd love to try it!

ghost shooting is fun, you take it in complete darkness and paint your subject with a low tone light, nothign real intense. this way only the places you shine the light will get captured by the camera, I use a 15-30 second exposure with iso 100-or 200. sometimes higher. it a bit of trial and error to each situation. to get the ghost effect about half way through the 30 seconds I have the subject walk out of frame so i can piant the ground behind them, this gives it the transparent look. it is best done with close backround unlike the river setting I used. play with it.. you can be in your own photo several times if you want.

have fun, he should enjoy the photos afterward. I find that a small LED that isnt super bright works best, but try a few to find what works for you. post your results.
