canada trip in my car:
tripod
5D
40D
12-24mm
24-70
70-200 2.8
1.4 and 2.0 TCs

with the car, that wasn't bad. Did a weekend in NYC when the wife was running a race with the 1Dii, 12-24, 24-70 and 70-200... That trip ended up making me sell the 1Dii.

For my month long vacation to East Africa in 2009 I took:

50D+Battery grip
Canon 17-40mm f/4 L
Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8
Canon EX 430 II flash
Plus multiple batteries and CF cards; Sanho Hyperdrive for backing up the images. I never used the 17-40mm. If I go on a trip like that again I'll just take the 100-400mm, 70-200mm and 24-70mm.

Regards,
Michael

unless you're getting paid...are you freaking mad?

No and yes... to my wife if I don't try to get the same results for my family as I do for my clients I will be sleeping next to my camera :o It was crazy but I got about 60 pics that I really like but my wife got about 700 that she loved. If my wife is happy I'm happy!

on the first trip of this year (to crete, greece):

zeiss 28mm/f2.0
zeiss 85mm/f1.4
canon 5D "classic"
no photo bag (a no do)

on the second trip (to NYC) i added the EF 50/1.4 and a photo gear rucksack. I figured i might let the 50mm at home for the next trip, since i used it less than 10% of the time.

on the thrid trip (to portugal), i had nothing but a cell phone camera. i apreciated very much travelling light. but one day, the light and the setting were so beautyfull that i missed my 5d pretty much.

for the next trip to france, i think of taking again the two zeiss plus the EF 135mm/f2.

I still try to find my one lens focal length. when i got the 135L i had a pretty good time with it, and used it exclusively for allmost three weeks. then i went more into primes and got about one month with my 50mm only. this is my most compact kit, i like much its light weight. but for some reasons, i dont like the rendering of the EF 50/1.4 too much. then, after getting zhe zeiss 85/1.4 for a very good deal, i loved it very much.

maybe it's just an illusion that i might find my one lens focal length. may be i should just go with a zoom. maybe travelling with slg gear is nevertheless anything else but light.

One time I took a 5D with a 50 1.4 to NYC and that was it. Boy, did I regret that one! I was never wide enough in the City to get anything completely and not zoom enough to get the crowd's faces. So, I take the 17-40 when I go now in just a holster bag. If I know I'll be touring a museum, I take the 24-70 because in Met, they don't allow flash. That's the least I ever took for one trip. The most, I think is this time, so I should have taken a bigger bag because the 3 lenses don't fit in the Domke I brought. :(

SuzyView, I have a question how is the 17-40mm on your 5D II is the corners really that bad as they say on the reviews?

A friend has this lens that I can borrow if I need. Is the 17mm much wider than the 24mm?

I bring ALL my glass. I used to leave the 135L behind often, but not the 100ZE MP. And I used to bring the 300 f4IS out on shoots (along for the flight, but not many walks) only when I didn't bring much else, but now that I have a 70-200 2.8II, it's easy to pack the 1.4xII. I can't afford to have lenses I don't use. I don't always walk every day with primes, but I have them in the hotel.

I had my TT Airport Takeff loaded up on this trip and on virtually every flight they tried to make me check it at the gate. On the short flights in an Embraer if fit perfect under the seat. It wasnt a good feeling worrying about baggage handlers tossing around a soft bag filled with thousands in glass. In the end it was with me on every flight. Next time I think I'll opt for a smaller TT like the UD 60 and a second bag with any extra bodies, MBP, etc.

Going to Egypt and Jordan for two weeks towards the end of the year, and I'll be taking the 5D2, 7D, 17-40, 24-70, 15 fish, nifty fifty, gitzo tripod, and probably the 70-200 for the Nile cruise. I know if I don't bring the 70-200 I'll wish I had it.

The 10-22 will really come in handy. I took my 70-200 but only used it once in the park. I felt odd shooting pics of my kids at the playground because all of the moms and nannys were watching the guy with the big white creepy lens.

The 17-40 is stuck to my 5DII this week. It's plenty wide, almost too wide, but it isn't. And I get very little, if any, vignetting with it. FF and the 17-40 is a definitely wonderful. Don't let any reviews sway you. And the 5DII is an excellent camera. Who's telling stories about it? That makes me sad.
